4.0 out of 5 stars Best for experienced nurse educators or educator tracked MSNs
Although I agree with another reviewers comments regarding the practice tests (both chapter and comprehensive), I already assumed this would be the case as most texts have inadequate test banks (evidence-based, not just my opinion). Nevertheless, you would expect better from some of the nation's best nurse educators.

Overall, the text presented everything I...

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed with practice questions, August 12, 2009
This review is from: Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) Review Manual (Paperback)
I am happy to say I passed the CNE exam, but I felt less confident about taking the exam after I completed the Comprehensive Practice Questions. The questions included two on Berwick and change. I was surprised that out of 55 questions 2 would be based on Berwick. Overall I found many of the questions to be knowledge based, such as what is the third step in Roger's five steps in the process of diffusion of innovation. This made me worry that I did not know enough specific facts from the writings of specific authors. Both the unit practice test questions and the comprehensive questions included concepts that I was unable to locate in the text of the book. In the comprehensive practice, I found some rationale for answers to be confusing. I suspected there was an error in the question/answer/rationale. One of the reasons I bought the book was for the practice questions. Now that the test is behind me, I believe that many of the practice questions provide an inaccurate view of the actual exam.

If you do not like material presented in an outline/bullet fashion, you may not like the text of the book. I know I wish the text included more examples and not simply bullet points.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best for experienced nurse educators or educator tracked MSNs, May 3, 2010

Although I agree with another reviewers comments regarding the practice tests (both chapter and comprehensive), I already assumed this would be the case as most texts have inadequate test banks (evidence-based, not just my opinion). Nevertheless, you would expect better from some of the nation's best nurse educators.

Overall, the text presented everything I needed to focus on for CNE prep. I took and passed the exam last Friday and there were only two questions which used material not covered in the review guide. If I had not been in an MSN educator track, I probably would have felt more confident reading Billings and Halstead, Bastable, and Oermann and Gaberson - but I teach for a living! Who has that kind of time? So, I would recommend this book for educators who are short on time, but know their way around a classroom, in general.

In fact, I'm buying two more copies and donating them to my program to help others pass the CNE.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, April 5, 2011
This review is from: Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) Review Manual (Paperback)
I took and passed the CNE exam yesterday. This is the only book I used to prepare and I can easily say it prepared me very well for the CNE exam. I am not educated in nursing education. I am a nurse practitioner clinically and have been a full time assistant professor teaching at the graduate level for the past 5 years. I read through this book in its entirety twice in 4 months and while the CNE exam was definitely challenging, this book provided me with the vast majority of knowledge needed to pass. I am grateful to these authors for preparing such a fantastic study tool. My only small word of caution would be that some of the practice exam questions do conflict with some of the content and rationales of NLN's own practice exam. Nonetheless, this is a very small criticism and the exceedingly large benefits this book provides far outweighs this very insignificant limitation. I highly recommend this book. I believe you will find it to be critical to your success on the CNE.

4.0 out of 5 stars Everything I needed to know, January 30, 2011

This review is from: Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) Review Manual (Paperback)
Everything I needed to know for the exam was covered in this book. My masters is in nursing education so most of the content felt familiar, I just needed to brush up on theories and their applications.

I, too, found the practice questions in this book to be hit or miss -- depended on the author. I did order the practice test from NLN and found that some of the questions on that were word for word the same questions as in the book. Questions on the actual exam were definitely application and analysis level so I did have to think but I did fine.

I have passed my book on to two collegues who have now used it to pass the exam. Our dean has purchased a few copies to put in the library for other faculty. Well worth the investment.

This review manual reiterates the valuable information/education from the nurse educator program. I believe by utilizing the testing blueprint format (found in this manual), nurse educators can be successful in becoming certified.
