Editorial Reviews

Review

"For certified ophthalmic assistants who are preparing to take the certified ophthalmic technician's examination, this review manual will bring both relief and apprehension: relief through the ability to practice the art of test taking and identifying areas where the test taker's knowledge base is strong, and apprehension where the test taker's knowledge is weak. I believe that not using this review manual before taking the certifying examination will put the test taker at a distinct disadvantage."

About the Author

Jan Ledford’s first contact with the eyecare field occurred when she was about 7 years old. (We’ll admit that this took place before eye exams were mandatory for school children, but don’t tell Jan that we told you!) Her parents took her to an optometrist because her dad was very nearsighted. Sure enough, so was Jan. She remembers two things about that incident. First, the eye doctor was very nice because he had a great bag of goodies; if you were good, you could pick out several toys to take home. Second, once Jan got her glasses, she discovered that the trees had leaves and that the neighbors had a TV antenna on their roof.

About 2 years later, Jan got her first taste of the writer’s life. She decided to write a book (at age 10!) about a talking hamster. When Mrs. Clark, her teacher, found out about the book, she had Jan read each chapter to the class. After Jan finished, the class applauded. That’s all it took to make her love writing.

After entering the world of ophthalmic assisting in 1982, Jan advanced through the ranks until she earned her certification as an ophthalmic medical technologist. She brought with her not only a personal conviction about the importance of good vision, but an overwhelming desire to write. As of the printing of this second edition, she has 12 published books in the eyecare field.

Jan lives in Franklin, North Carolina, with her husband Jim, their youngest son (Collin, a college student and music major), and four cats (Munchkin, Boonie Rat, Angel, and Josey Dee). As a freelance medical writer and editor, she runs her own business called EyeWrite Productions. In addition to writing eyecare related material, she has branched into novels and short stories. You can check out her latest novel at www.millenniatech.info.

I found the review manual very helpful in studying for my COA exam. It was precise, and provided me with knowledge of alot of things that I had not dealt with in clinic before. There is alot of "old-school" things in the book, but come in very handy because there is alot of things on the test that are based on technology from years ago. Had I not studied this book, I would have been lost in taking my exam.

I purchased this guide for my COT review, and thank goodness I purchased Stein's book as well or I would not have passed. The book Ledford wrote has incorrect information in the optics section, like figuring out the dioptric power of a magnifying glass. This is just an example of many errors in this text. I also found much easier ways to calculate certain formulas than contained in this text.

At first I wasn't so sure that any of this information could be incorrect, however it was confirmed by an O.D. and a COMT. I also wrote to JCAHPO and they stated that Ledford's book was not an approved study guide for the COT examination.

Buyer Beware!!!

This manual was excellent in preparing me for my C.O.A. exam. It helps you to realize and improve upon your weak area's and to reinforce your not-so weak area's. It is much like the exam itself. I will definetly be using C.O.T. exam review manual to help study for my C.O.T. exam.

This book is wonderful for those of you who don't have a lot of sit down time to study. I went through the book and was able to identify the areas I needed to study most. This helped me avoid excess study time in areas I was already fairly comfortable in. It is also a nice size book to carry around with you so whenever you have a free minute, you can quiz yourself. I also used it at work as a trivia game with my other co-workers. It made learning fun! I definately recommend this book to anyone hoping to pass the COA exam.

Don't let anyone tell you different, I got this review manual and studied basically nothing but it and just passed my COA today!!! I was even told at Jacapho, that I have waisted my time studying this book and that I should have rescheduled my exam cause none of the questions that are in this book are on the exam!! Well guess what she was not right!! Even though the wording is not verbatium, the information is very valuable- it is a study guide, not the answers to the COA test!! Without it I would not have passed!! It made me aware of the things that I needed to read and do more research on and focus more on those things verses reading some huge book full of words and not really making you think through the whys and why nots- this book is so great cause if you don't get the question correct, it goes into detail and explains why, which proves to be way more valuable!!!

GET IT!!!

This book is a valuable tool in studying for the COA test. I bought this book after reading many reviews. I would like to say, if you are even thinking about the COA test, you must have this study guide. I found that the sections were well laid out, the answers were well defined. This book is a much better resource than the COA Manuel purchased from the Academy. When you finish this study guide, you will be more than prepared for the COA exam!!! It is well worth the investment and will become a resource guide for you and for your office.

Janice

you have responded to one of the negative reviews regarding your COT manual, and you stated that when an error if found you made the corrections. However, have you updated the COT review manuel since 2004, since it is still the second edition?

I am currently studing for my COT from your COT review manual, and if those same errors remain I would like to know.

I used the COA review manual and pass my test. It was wonderful.

Cynthia
