More About the Author

My philosophy in writing books has been strongly influenced by my college teaching experience in information technology and software engineering - clear descriptions of basic principles, philosophy and motivation for using a specific technology, and then clear examples of how to use it in practice. In a book with limited pages, it's not always possible to cover every topic, or to provide all information on a specific topic in the detail required to perform a particular task. I see the role of trade books as "breadth first, depth second" - these books provide orientation, but if you need intimate detail on a specific application, function or method, then you will almost certainly need to consult vendor documentation. For example, the Sun administration reference collection for Solaris contains many thousands of pages of detail, which can be daunting at first, but very useful in the long term.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book, May 27, 2003
This review is from: Sun Certified Solaris(tm) 9 System and Network Administrator All-in-One Exam Guide (Hardcover)
I bought this book and the Tim Gibbs book. Both are very good certification books with many, many test questions. Of course these authors are not going to reprint the exact test questions - that would be against copyright. ...

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book, February 27, 2003

I just bought two books in the All-In-One series - this one and the CISSP book - and they are just great. This one covers most of the topics in good detail for the sysadmin and net admin exams. I didn't give it 5 stars because I would have liked a bigger section for net admin. But the new exams have been "dumbed down" so much that maybe it's OK.

And before any M$ bigots jump in with more trashy comments on UNIX - save your breath for the .NET server release (I'm still holding).

4.0 out of 5 stars Broad coverage of relevant topics, April 6, 2003
This review is from: Sun Certified Solaris(tm) 9 System and Network Administrator All-in-One Exam Guide (Hardcover)
I'm currently studying for the System Administrator exam and I found this book to be very useful indeed. It covers all of the main topics listed in the exam requirements, but sometimes you have to dig to find them (why do publishers always have poor indexing). I've been reading the Sun manuals - and they're too long and too verbose. Watters cuts through the ...and explains concepts very clearly usually with one or more worked examples. I like the format and the hardcover is very durable - many of my other computer books just end up falling apart.
