This DVD, Raising the Perfect Puppy by Cesar Millan, offers excellent advice for selecting a puppy. However, if you already purchased your puppy, you may be concerned over the choice you made. Cesar presents 3 different buying/adopting scenarios and makes it very clear (and interesting) how to choose a puppy based on their energy. He describes each energy type and the video shows many different dogs exhibiting the signs of each energy type, which should be matched to yours and your family's energy type. No worries though: if you find out that your dog's energy is not the best match for yours, you can always use Cesar's process of exercise, discipline and affection to get them where you like.

The reason for the 3 stars is because there's very little else on the DVD after the selection process. There a few brief presentations (what to do on the day you bring the puppy/dog home, and how to give treats), but they are not very detailed. The most useful thing I learned is that there is a specific way to choose a good location for the crate (out of the major walking zones of the house, not in a deserted place, preferably near a window) as well as how to get your dog to go in it and relax. But that's it. I need much more and would like it all at once, for one price, and in movie format. However, I love watching Cesar do his thing!!!

This DVD is helpful, but didn't provide unique insight. It said the same thing you read in the new puppy books and didn't provide many details. We will be bringing home a new puppy in a few more weeks and I was hoping for something beyond what is shown in his shows and beyond the books we've purchased on house training and on our breed. His discussion on energy was a good one, but one you get from his television shows or on other programs that discuss selecting the right energy for you. I did enjoy watching it, but I didn't leave the DVD thinking "I really needed to know this".

Who doesn't love puppies? Better yet, who doesn't like a fun, but well behaved puppy? And on top of that, who doesn't love having that adorable puppy grow up into a fun and still well behaved dog? I highly recommend this to ANY dog owner, whether you have a puppy or adult dog and whether you have had your dog for 1 day, 1 month, 1 year or 10 years. Cesar always has very practical tips that you can use with your dog of any age. While this DVD makes you want to go out and get a puppy, it reminds you that a puppy is a lot of work....and the rewards of raising that puppy the right way!
