Product Description

Amazon.com

Cesaria Evora, a Cape Verdean with a rich alto voice, has been described as a cross between Edith Piaf and Billie Holiday. It wasn't until 1988, though, that Evora traveled to Paris to record. Her fourth album, 1992's Miss Perfumado, made her a major star in France and Portugal. Her 1994 album, Cesaria Evora, duplicated that triumph, and it's this latter recording that has become her first U.S. release. Evora, celebrated in Europe as the "Barefoot Diva," is now 52, but she is still able to give every word a breathy intimacy even as she fills it with a pitch-perfect, full-toned resonance. Drawing on the work of top Cape Verdean songwriters Nando Da Cruz, Amandio Cabral, and Manuel De Novas, she sings in Criuolo, a Creole variation of Portuguese. As in Brazil, another former Portuguese colony with a strong African influence, Cape Verde has produced a music that is light and airy even as it incorporates African rhythms and quartertones. The morna possesses the low-key tunefulness of an equatorial cabaret music, but Evora's vocals impart a world-weary gravity to these tales of homesickness and doomed love. --Geoffrey Himes

I bought this CD over 2 years ago, but felt that I needed to review it here. The entire CD is AMAZING. I enjoyed EVERY track. This is a difficult feat for any CD, considering that about 98% of the time, I end up only enjoying MAYBE 4 out of 10 songs on most. That's not the case here. Her voice is beautiful, the music washes my stress away, and even though I don't know the dialect in which she is singing, I can gather that in some of the tracks, it is a lament of some kind. A good way to describe Ms. Evora's music is this: Billie Holliday Meets the Exotic West Coast of Africa. This CD will NOT disappoint!

Cesaria is to this style of music what Ralph Stanley is to bluegrass. Both imbue their music with their life experiences and give us something more than mere musical recitation of words.
Her voice conveys the message of the lyrics so well: she sings with light and hope in "Tuda dia e dia" (Every day is a new day), and she captures the wistfulness of unrequited love in "Areia de Salamansa" (On the Sands of Salamansa). A great selection if you're in a thoughtful mood.

Legend has it that God had a fistful of small rocks and peebles and didn't know what to do with it so he threw it out into the great big ocean thus Capo Verde, dry and arid with people, pirates and cultures crossing paths and staying and then Cesaria Evora. She is Cape Verde, she and her music, this self titled CD is a testament to this. The distinct sytle is morma, the word says it, mournful songs about lost love and longing expressed in creole portugese. Who else can better sing it than Cersaria Evora. It's not just her rich deep melancholic voice, but also the gorgeous cavaquinho guitar and impecable musicians of the island that acompanies every song in this beautiful CD. If you are lucky enough to stumble into this CD, you'll know what I mean and if not I highly recommend it.

Although Cesaria Evora sings mostly in a creole that I do not understand, I feel fully connected to every note and word that comes from her voice. I've been listening to this CD for years and have not tired of it. She transports me to her native land off the coast of Africa with each listening.

As an African-American of Cape Verdean descent, it makes me proud to know that the rest of the world has "discovered" the voice of this remarkable woman. Cesaria's melodies transform the listener, regardless of the lack of understanding the words. Her voice caresses the soul and paints an indelible picture of beauty on the heart. BRAVO, Cesaria Evora! Viva, Cabo Verde!

Oh, Cesaria. That voice. This was my first experience of her, and it was completely by chance. I was looking for something different, grabbed a cd from the world music section in my favourite music store (clearly, this was a while ago), popped the cd in the player and oh my. To call her soulful doesn't come close to the emotion this woman's voice carries, and what a voice. I have since bought "Miss Perfumado", "Cafe Atlantico", "Mar Azul" and "Sao Vicente" where she sings with contemporary artists - I adore the duet with Bonnie Raitt. Bonnie sings as only someone who's lived hard and hurt deeply can, and as she follows Cesaria's words, it's there in her voice. The combination of the two can break your heart. And there's so much more to the album than this one song - it's gorgeous through and through. But as much as I love the other albums, this one remains my favourite. Perhaps it's because it was my first exposure to her, but there seems to be something about it that brings me back time and time again. Give her a try. You won't regret it. She's pure magic.

This woman is definitely a stand-alone singer...there's no comparison to anyone!! Her voice is so original and I could never tire of hearing her. Oo-ooh, if only I spoke her language, it would double the pure pleasure of her style.

If you enjoy music that can soothe a raging soul, then Mrs. Evora will deliever you a product that is like Ice Cream on a Hot Day. Her delivery is slow and methodical with a tempo that snaps with a fire like blaze. I have and will recommend this album to friends.
