Cesaria's voice is so lush,

This review is from: Cesaria (Audio CD)
Cesaria is to this style of music what Ralph Stanley is to bluegrass. Both imbue their music with their life experiences and give us something more than mere musical recitation of words. Her voice conveys the message of the lyrics so well: she sings with light and hope in "Tuda dia e dia" (Every day is a new day), and she captures the wistfulness of unrequited love in "Areia de Salamansa" (On the Sands of Salamansa). A great selection if you're in a thoughtful mood.

Legend has it that God had a fistful of small rocks and peebles and didn't know what to do with it so he threw it out into the great big ocean thus Capo Verde, dry and arid with people, pirates and cultures crossing paths and staying and then Cesaria Evora. She is Cape Verde, she and her music, this self titled CD is a testament to this. The distinct sytle is morma, the word says it, mournful songs about lost love and longing expressed in creole portugese. Who else can better sing it than Cersaria Evora. It's not just her rich deep melancholic voice, but also the gorgeous cavaquinho guitar and impecable musicians of the island that acompanies every song in this beautiful CD. If you are lucky enough to stumble into this CD, you'll know what I mean and if not I highly recommend it.
