4.0 out of 5 stars Worthy companion to your POH
This book is for the renter as well as owner. Written a style similar to the owners manual you get with your car rather than the somewhat dry text of the Pilots Operating Handbook. It is not a substitute for the POH! I did not give it a full 5 stars because it only covers the 1977 onward models. If you are flying anything earlier than a Model N or one of the more...

1.0 out of 5 stars Out of Date
This book covers the 172 model years 1977-1985, and talks about how production ended in 1985 with the model P. The 172 lives on, of course, and if you happen to be flying one that's less than 20 years old this book misses the mark. In trying to cover so many models, it is necessarily vague and non-committal on many items. The book also inexplicably uses a Piper weight...

This review is from: Cessna 172 (ASA Reference Books) (Paperback)

It is not a substitute for the POH! I did not give it a full 5 stars because it only covers the 1977 onward models. If you are flying anything earlier than a Model N or one of the more "exotic" versions of the Skyhawk, this book will be of limited value.

The book also inexplicably uses a Piper weight and balance chart as an example instead of a Cessna one. If you're a pilot... or planning to become one... there's nothing here that you won't find in more clarity and detail in the Pilot's Operating Handbook (POH) for the model 172 you're planning to fly. I'd pass on this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nothing New, January 6, 2009

This review is from: Cessna 172 (ASA Reference Books) (Paperback)
The ASA Cessna 172 Reference Book offers little in the way of new information. It's more of a rehash of The Pilot's Operating Handbook, written in more layman's terms and with perhaps a little more detail. Nothing to get excited about.

4.0 out of 5 stars A USEFULL HANDBOOK FOR 172's 1976-1985 MODELS, January 11, 2007
This review is from: Cessna 172 (ASA Reference Books) (Paperback)
I find this a usefull handbook. It is limited to the 172s built from 1977 to 1985. This restriction has made it less interesting for me, since I own a 172 built in 1967. It is clearly written, easy to read, with practical information covering all important issues.

It covers almost everything you may want to know if you neeed to fly a Cessna 172 and you have no previous experience with it.
It is not a substitute for the POH but I am sure you will read this book from page page 1 to the end and you will be satisfied.

I've soloed in a 150 a number of years ago and wanted to know the basic differences between the 2-seater 150 & the 4-seat 172 that I'm going to be starting to fly this week. Gave me the basics, but not real technical.

This book is the definitive manual other than the Pilot Operating Handbook. A must for all students who fly the 172.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cessna 172 review, September 14, 2008

This review is from: Cessna 172 (ASA Reference Books) (Paperback)
I haven't flown in many years. Before using a computer flight simulator I needed a review of the Cessna 172. This book provided just what I was looking for. It will not teach me how to fly but, it will bring back once known facts and settings of this aircraft and make X-Plane more meaningful.

Cost very reasonable, shipping was quick and the book was well packaged.
