Book Description

Philadelphia Museum of Art March 24, 2009

With essays by Roberta Bernstein, Yve-Alain Bois, Jean-François Chevrier, John Elderfield, John Golding, Christopher Green, Jennie Hirsh, Joop M. Joosten, Anabelle Kienle, Albert Kostenevich, Carolyn Lanchner, Mark D. Mitchell, Joseph J. Rishel, Katherine Sachs, Richard Shiff, Robert Storr, and Michael R. Taylor

The famous proclamation that Cézanne “is the father of us all” has been attributed to both Matisse and Picasso, and his influence has extended to a great diversity of artists thereafter. In this monumental book, a team of distinguished scholars offers the most comprehensive view to date on Cézanne’s vital role in shaping European and American art throughout the 20th century and into the 21st.

More than forty paintings and ten works on paper by Cézanne—many of his best-known and most admired—are juxtaposed throughout the catalogue with approximately 120 works by a range of modern and contemporary artists who found in Cézanne a central inspiration. They include Max Beckmann, Georges Braque, Charles Demuth, Alberto Giacometti, Arshile Gorky, Marsden Hartley, Fernand Léger, Brice Marden, Piet Mondrian, Giorgio Morandi, Liubov Popova, and Jeff Wall, as well as Picasso, Matisse, Johns, and Kelly. The essays offer insights into the “conversation” between Cézanne and each of these other artists, who stand on a par with his greatness. Among its many features, this book contains conceptual overviews by Richard Shiff and Robert Storr as well as an illustrated chronology.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Philadelphia''s resplendent exhibition and its fascinating catalog are a monument to the still powerful formulation of Clement Greenberg. . . . Cézanne''s paintings were a summa of his work that deserves a cum laude, and the array of modernist works was equally impressive."—Robert Herbert, New York Review of Books

This book, the catalogue for the current show at the Philadelphia Museum of art, puts together more than 60 works by the master from Aix and 110 works by 16 "pupils" such as Marsden Hartley, Matisse, Picasso, Alberto Giacometti, Ellsworth Kelly, Jasper Johns, etc, to brilliantly show how all the art that came after Cézanne was influenced by him, including the ubiquitous and all-encompassing art of Pablo Picasso.

The illustrations are marvelous (some of rarely-seen works held in private collections), the text is enlightening, devoting one chapter to each artist, and the comparisons allow incredible discoveries (such as Ellsworth Kelly's huge swath of blue and Cézanne's sea in his Gulf of the Estaque, Picasso's 1932 Le Rêve and Cézanne's mother, Brice Marden's large intertwined abstractions and Cézanne's large bathers, and many more such affiliations).

This is really a must-have book, one of the most ground-breaking recent studies on modern art.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cezanne: the father of us all., November 21, 2009

This book profuselly illustratated, shows the heritage and presence of Cézanne in contemporary and modern art. The suprematists and russina futurism spoke of cezannism. Those essays are a demonstration, or a proof of that assertion. Alll modern avantgarde has the mark of the creative genius of Cézanne, in Europe and America. This is also true of other countries klike Brazil, not studied here.
It is a magnificent book, with a general view of Cezanne influence and particular attention of the presence of Cezanne's touch in the works of Matisse, Picasso, Mondrian, Braque, POpova, Morandi and Giacometti, GOrski,Kelly and Jaspers John and Hrtley.

The Cézanne Exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art was truly one of the best shows ever created. Rarely does one see paintings so expertly hung but so excitingly juxtaposed. The book is a jewel itself and is an extension of the excellence of the exhibit.
