This review is from: Cezanne and Beyond (Philadelphia Museum of Art) (Hardcover)
This book, the catalogue for the current show at the Philadelphia Museum of art, puts together more than 60 works by the master from Aix and 110 works by 16 "pupils" such as Marsden Hartley, Matisse, Picasso, Alberto Giacometti, Ellsworth Kelly, Jasper Johns, etc, to brilliantly show how all the art that came after Cézanne was influenced by him, including the ubiquitous and all-encompassing art of Pablo Picasso.

The illustrations are marvelous (some of rarely-seen works held in private collections), the text is enlightening, devoting one chapter to each artist, and the comparisons allow incredible discoveries (such as Ellsworth Kelly's huge swath of blue and Cézanne's sea in his Gulf of the Estaque, Picasso's 1932 Le Rêve and Cézanne's mother, Brice Marden's large intertwined abstractions and Cézanne's large bathers, and many more such affiliations).

This is really a must-have book, one of the most ground-breaking recent studies on modern art.

This book profuselly illustratated, shows the heritage and presence of Cézanne in contemporary and modern art. The suprematists and russina futurism spoke of cezannism. Those essays are a demonstration, or a proof of that assertion. Alll modern avantgarde has the mark of the creative genius of Cézanne, in Europe and America. This is also true of other countries klike Brazil, not studied here.
It is a magnificent book, with a general view of Cezanne influence and particular attention of the presence of Cezanne's touch in the works of Matisse, Picasso, Mondrian, Braque, POpova, Morandi and Giacometti, GOrski,Kelly and Jaspers John and Hrtley.

The Cézanne Exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art was truly one of the best shows ever created. Rarely does one see paintings so expertly hung but so excitingly juxtaposed. The book is a jewel itself and is an extension of the excellence of the exhibit.
