Biography

Formed in 2008, Red Baraat is a pioneering eight-piece band from Brooklyn, New York. Conceived by Sunny Jain, the group has drawn worldwide praise for its singular sound -- a merging of hard driving North Indian bhangra rhythms with elements of jazz, go-go, brass funk, and hip-hop. Created with no less a purposeful agenda than manifesting joy and unity in all people, Red Baraat’s spirit ... Read more in Amazon's Red Baraat Store

Salutations,

I don't usually review music on here, but couldn't help but notice how negative and completely wasted the other reviews are on here.

I saw the Red Baraat live a few years back and couldn't help but go home with this CD!

In short it is funky, fresh, and exciting. Now, I've yet to be able to hook my pop-pumping Justin Bieber fan friends (yes, I know, although I would love to disown them for being Beiberbabies I still admire them for their, well mostly for their cooking and willingness to drive me places. In fact when I get a car . . . )that this is the album for them, but it stands alone in its own genre.

Get it: if you appreciate Indian fusion music. Skip it: if your simplistic mind can only comprehend completely repetitive beats in 4/4 time and simplistic lyrics that lack substance.

This band is a BLAST live! Almost everybody in the audience was up out of their seats dancing and laughing. The musicians all have some serious chops, imho. I'm not educated enough in music to say whether these guys are ground-breaking but it's the first time I've come across north Indian bhangra combined with latin funk and a little hip hop thrown in on the side, and the energy of the music is cloud-busting. If they come to your town, do yourself a favor and go see them!

Pretty weak. Nothing new to hear, so they added some horns and are classifying it as funk, meh. I would be curious to see if they chart or make it beyond a year or so as it would only appeal to the world music/NPR crowd. Unique but not great.
