Editorial Reviews

Review

If you hate chaining, this is the book for you. The technique of 'foundation stitches' means you don't have to chain - you make the foundation with the stitches of your first row. There's a short section explaining how to do it, and a variety of patterns for everything from clothes to homewares. The patterns are slightly inconsistent taste-wise, but the book's worth it for some fun ideas practising this technique, like the cabled dog jumper and dog basket, and a rather impressive hobbyhorse.-AllAboutYou.com

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice patterns, but minimal explanation of technique, May 11, 2009

There are FIVE and only five "foundation" stitches shown. They are not overly well explained or any different from what can be found on the web.

There are at least FOUR foundation stitches that are supposed to be on page 172 that are missing: dc eyelet foundation, back bar sc foundation stitch, rolled ring foundation stitch, and the dc ch1 foundation. After discovering this, I say this is a ONE STAR book at best! The whole idea is to make this technique easy, not instruct the start of a pattern be done without instructions. UGH! UGH! If shipping weren't so high, I'd send this back!

The patterns are pretty, but I bought the book for instructions on how to convert the usual "chain 205" to a combination of chain and foundation row in a general way. This book is nearly useless for that. I am very disappointed.

This book isn't exactly what I was looking for....and the title is a little misleading. The majority of the patterns are rated intermediate or experienced. And most are full garments....I was hoping to get introduced to this technique with maybe some accesories or simpler patterns.

3.0 out of 5 stars my thoughts, October 16, 2009

There were instructions in the back of the book. But trying to remember the directions in addition to reading the pattern, I honestly don't see how this procedure saves time. Maybe with practice....? I don't have the patience nor the time involved in learning this technique.
