4.0 out of 5 stars Not quite 'easy'
This book isn't exactly what I was looking for....and the title is a little misleading. The majority of the patterns are rated intermediate or experienced. And most are full garments....I was hoping to get introduced to this technique with maybe some accesories or simpler patterns.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice patterns, but minimal explanation of technique
There are FIVE and only five "foundation" stitches shown. They are not overly well explained or any different from what can be found on the web.

There are at least FOUR foundation stitches that are supposed to be on page 172 that are missing: dc eyelet foundation, back bar sc foundation stitch, rolled ring foundation stitch, and the dc ch1 foundation...

There are FIVE and only five "foundation" stitches shown. They are not overly well explained or any different from what can be found on the web.

There are at least FOUR foundation stitches that are supposed to be on page 172 that are missing: dc eyelet foundation, back bar sc foundation stitch, rolled ring foundation stitch, and the dc ch1 foundation. After discovering this, I say this is a ONE STAR book at best! The whole idea is to make this technique easy, not instruct the start of a pattern be done without instructions. UGH! UGH! If shipping weren't so high, I'd send this back!

The patterns are pretty, but I bought the book for instructions on how to convert the usual "chain 205" to a combination of chain and foundation row in a general way. This book is nearly useless for that. I am very disappointed.

There were instructions in the back of the book. But trying to remember the directions in addition to reading the pattern, I honestly don't see how this procedure saves time. Maybe with practice....? I don't have the patience nor the time involved in learning this technique.

I love this book. I have always hated the chain and first row of any project. I have started an afghan with 212 chains and the first row of sc. It went so fast with this method and looks great. The book is worth its weight in gold.

someone introduced me to this stitch but I just could not get it. I saw this book at another bookseller and bought it not knowing it was available on Amazon, so I paid much more for it. Be that as it may,it took a few tries but now I have it down pat and now I do my foundation AND first row all at once. It lies flatter and is neater. Before with my foundation chain then going back to do the first row it looked a little "off" but I was able to work with it. As I added rows onto the "old" way it was always uneven but again I was able to work with it. Now my finished product is more even with the chain free way.

1.0 out of 5 stars Uninspiring and a little confusing, March 18, 2010
This review is from: Chain-Free Crochet Made Easy (Paperback)
I expected this to be a book on the techniques of foundation crochet, and like previous reviewers, possibly some direction on how to convert a pattern that starts with a beginning chain to a foundation row. Imagine my surprise when I found it was a pattern book with only a handful of pages on technique in the back.

Even so, I was willing to give this a shot. Then I found there are two or three patterns that are worth making in the whole book; the others are boring and derivative: afghans, walker bags, and ugly little doilies. If this is the only crochet book you own, perhaps it would be worth the price of admission. But if you are looking for a book to round out your collection, this is not the one. Learn the foundation crochet techniques from Youtube and subscribe to Interweave Crochet magazine for about the same price.

A note about the patterns: I've seen and worked from a lot of patterns and I found these unnecessarily complicated. Rather than noting the stitch pattern at the beginning of the page and then using an abbreviation within the instructions, which seems to be the industry standard, the instructions are cluttered up with repetitive individual stitches. It makes them seem much more complicated than they really are and hard to follow along.

Sadly, I'm not impressed.

Instructions are fairly clear--I am an intermediate crocheter (?). I haven't tried all the stitches yet, but the one I tried I figured out okay. Not certain there are many projects I would actually use out of the book, just adapt to other patterns.

I am always up for something new to learn in knitting or crochet. This is a fun time saving method of creating your base chain and first row in crochet. It is very easy, especially if the base chain row stitches are all the same. It is like crocheting up side down! I think it is useful in certain applications and will continue to use it. I hope more books using this method will become available!

Thanks

I just got this book in the mail today. I love everything in the book I have seen so far. I can't wait to get started crocheting some of these projects. Since I already know the foundation stitches I thought this book would be perfect for me and it is. There is even a beautiful cabled dog sweater I can't wait to make for my dog. She loves her store bought dog sweaters so I know she will love the one made by me even more!
