Book Description

Sword of Truth, Book 9 January 4, 2005
“How much of this blood is his?” “Most of it, I’m afraid,” a second woman said as they both rushed along beside him. As Richard fought to focus his mind on his need to remain conscious, the breathless voices sounded to him as if they were coming from some great dim distance. He wasn’t sure who they were. He knew that he knew them, but right then it just didn’t seem to matter. The crushing pain in the left side of his chest and his need for air had him at the ragged edge of panic. It was all he could do to try to pull each crucial breath. Even so, he had a bigger worry. Richard struggled to put voice to his burning concern, but he couldn’t form the words, couldn’t get out any more than a gasping moan. He clutched the arm of the woman beside him, desperate to get them to stop, to get them to listen. She misunderstood and instead urged the men carrying him to hurry, even though they already panted with the effort of bearing him over the rocky ground in the deep shade among the towering pines. They tried to be as gentle as possible, but they never dared to slow. Not far off, a rooster crowed in the still air, as if this were an ordinary morning like any other. Richard observed the storm of activity swirling around him with an odd sense of detachment. Only the pain seemed real. He remembered hearing it once said that when you died, no matter how many people were with you, you died alone. That's how he felt now - alone.

About the Author

One of the most popular writers of fantasy today, Terry Goodkind divides his time between Maine and Nevada.

From AudioFile

This installment of the Sword of Truth series finds Richard Cypher in the strange position of being the only person who remembers that his wife, Kahlan, ever lived. While those around him think he has lost his mind, he perseveres in trying to find her, knowing that her fate is tied to his and to the fates of those who believe he is their only hope. Jim Bond returns to familiar characters, presenting them distinctly and clearly. Bond's somewhat understated style and relaxed, steady pace keep the story moving and help listeners sustain interest from start to finish. The characters' secrets and political maneuverings are in good hands with Bond. 4.0 out of 5 stars Chainfire;, January 9, 2005

The Ninth Novel in the Sword of Truth Series has left me both waiting for more and wondering why. Chainfire I feel was a slow moving pace that kept drudging up Richard's current problem. It seems to me that in the last two books especially that Richard always seems to be racing against time for something. There is such a frantic air in these novels that myself as a reader am feeling hurried throughout the book. Chainfire furthers the plot for the future novels by setting the stage for all that is to come. It acts as a bridge to set up the past books and lead the series into a conclusion. Though the stage being set for the final novels reverts back to the conflict of the first novel; the boxes of orden. Chainfire has brought back a fire in Goodkind's writing that was ever-present throughout the earlier novels. It seems that as the story furthers Richard seems to preach more and more. To many it may seem aggravating and furthering away from the pace of the first two novels, but in essence it flows perfectly with the plot. We see the main charachter go from a simple, strong-headed man , into a full-fledged leader. This transition requires Richard to be more vocal and preach his views. He is a leader of a nation at war and if he were to remian quiet and awe-stricken as he was in the earlier novels it would not do justice to his charachter. All in all I feel this was as strong effort from Goodkind that presented a new problem to be solved, and great lead-in to the end of the series.

2.0 out of 5 stars I was a fool--learn from my mistake, March 11, 2006

I bought this audio book even after I read the many negative reviews. I saw a couple of positive reviews and thought it might not be that bad. Never have I been more mistaken. The didactic tone of the character Richard's "speeches" put me off. I became so frustrated that I literally fast-forwarded through an hour of Richard's diatribes. I thank Terry Goodkind for his amazing first few books and will cherish their memory, but somewhere along the way he lost the gift of story-telling. Buyer beware, you will regret this purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tired of bad reviews, April 24, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I almost passed on bying this book, because of a number of reviews that made it sound worthless. I have been listening from the begining of the series, and have always had a hard time finding a good point to stop.
There are some times when Terry can get a little preachy. I can't argue with that, but the reviews that make the top of the list for this book made it sound like it would be at least half of the story.

I finally purchased the book thinking I will regret it, but I read the series this far so I could read at least one more.

I found myself thinking that it was about to start! Any time now! Here it comes!

I could not find what they were talking about.

I just finished this book, and am ordering the next one. If you read one of the same lousey reviews I did, just ignore it and keep reading the series.
