4.0 out of 5 stars Chainfire;
The Ninth Novel in the Sword of Truth Series has left me both waiting for more and wondering why. Chainfire I feel was a slow moving pace that kept drudging up Richard's current problem. It seems to me that in the last two books especially that Richard always seems to be racing against time for something. There is such a frantic air in these novels that myself as a...

2.0 out of 5 stars I was a fool--learn from my mistake
I bought this audio book even after I read the many negative reviews. I saw a couple of positive reviews and thought it might not be that bad. Never have I been more mistaken. The didactic tone of the character Richard's "speeches" put me off. I became so frustrated that I literally fast-forwarded through an hour of Richard's diatribes. I thank Terry Goodkind for his...

The Ninth Novel in the Sword of Truth Series has left me both waiting for more and wondering why. Chainfire I feel was a slow moving pace that kept drudging up Richard's current problem. It seems to me that in the last two books especially that Richard always seems to be racing against time for something. There is such a frantic air in these novels that myself as a reader am feeling hurried throughout the book. Chainfire furthers the plot for the future novels by setting the stage for all that is to come. It acts as a bridge to set up the past books and lead the series into a conclusion. Though the stage being set for the final novels reverts back to the conflict of the first novel; the boxes of orden. Chainfire has brought back a fire in Goodkind's writing that was ever-present throughout the earlier novels. It seems that as the story furthers Richard seems to preach more and more. To many it may seem aggravating and furthering away from the pace of the first two novels, but in essence it flows perfectly with the plot. We see the main charachter go from a simple, strong-headed man , into a full-fledged leader. This transition requires Richard to be more vocal and preach his views. He is a leader of a nation at war and if he were to remian quiet and awe-stricken as he was in the earlier novels it would not do justice to his charachter. All in all I feel this was as strong effort from Goodkind that presented a new problem to be solved, and great lead-in to the end of the series.

I thank Terry Goodkind for his amazing first few books and will cherish their memory, but somewhere along the way he lost the gift of story-telling. Buyer beware, you will regret this purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tired of bad reviews, April 24, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I almost passed on bying this book, because of a number of reviews that made it sound worthless. I have been listening from the begining of the series, and have always had a hard time finding a good point to stop.
There are some times when Terry can get a little preachy. I can't argue with that, but the reviews that make the top of the list for this book made it sound like it would be at least half of the story.

I finally purchased the book thinking I will regret it, but I read the series this far so I could read at least one more.

I found myself thinking that it was about to start! Any time now! Here it comes!

I could not find what they were talking about.

I just finished this book, and am ordering the next one. If you read one of the same lousey reviews I did, just ignore it and keep reading the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as I expected, May 21, 2008
This is the 9th book in a series and it does not disappoint. Keeping the reader/listener engaged through such an epic tale is no small feat but Terry Goodkind does it well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Chainfire Review (CD Audio), November 9, 2006

I'd have to say that this is a good product. I listened to it during my daily commute and it was a nice change of pace from talk and music.

The voice acting (Jim Bond) was good, though I feel that the female parts were a little homogenous and in some cases whiney and boredom were good descriptors of those parts being read.

One point of contention I have with the reading is that I felt that the voice actor was mispronouncing one of the main characters' names (Kahlan Amnell). He pronounced it Kaylin instead of the way it is spelled. I'm sorry, but no matter how you slice it, you don't get Kaylin out of Kahlan. However, this is a minor point and can be forgiven considering the entire experience.

I give it a thumbs up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't Wait for the Next Great Book! Another Winner!, September 22, 2005
Goodkind is one of the best science fiction/fantasy writers out there right now. Every time you sit down and read his books, you feel pulled right into the story. What a disappointment for me when the story ends. Although I was frustrated with Kahlan disappearing in his story. This book pulls you through a ton of gut-wrenching emotions and keeps your interest all the way through. Goodkind with his story, battles and intrique keep you right on the edge of your seat. All I can say if you want to get lost in a set of book Goodkind's Sword of Truth Novels is the series to read!

5.0 out of 5 stars waldo, October 8, 2005
This book may have been long and drawn out, but it was one of the most well written books I have ever read. It is a story of Richard struggling to prove, to the world, that Khalan really exists. What is so great about this book is that as you read it it makes you begin to wonder if all your memories of Khalan are as bogus as Richards seem to everyone else.
This book is one of the best books of the whole series, and better than most other fantasy novels I have read. Any one that does not like this book doesn't have the intellect or imagination required to read and understand a book of this quality.
