From Booklist

Although recently estranged, Magdalene la Batarde and her erstwhile lover, Sir Bellamy, once again team to solve the murder of one of Magdalene's sister prostitutes. Nelda Roundheel's death would be of little interest to anyone in twelfth-century London, but when her battered body is found in the bedchamber of Bellamy's patron, the bishop of Winchester, her killing takes on more sinister implications. Someone is clearly out to compromise the bishop, and the list of possible candidates runs the gamut from the king himself to the lowliest tavern denizen. A keen knowledge of medieval customs and political machinations, along with a sensitivity for character development, a sharp ear for dialogue, and an incisive attention to detail, elevate Gellis' historical mystery series beyond the standards of the subgenre. The interplay between Magdalene and Bellamy is as subtly nuanced and sensuous as any in contemporary settings, and Gellis' intricate plot twists and nose for intrigue should appeal to any mystery fan. More About the Author

Roberta Gellis has a varied educational background--a master's degree in biochemistry and another in medieval literature--and working history--10 years as a research chemist, many years as a free-lance editor of scientific manuscripts, and more than 40 years as a writer. She is married--to the same man for over 60 years (no mean feat in these days) and lives in Lafayette, Indiana, with her husband Charles and a lively Scottish terrier called Zoe. She has one child, Mark, who teaches Rhetoric (a fancy name for expository writing) at Kettering University in Michigan. Mark is married to Sandra and they have a lovely daughter, Elizabeth.

Gellis has been a successful writer of historical fiction, publishing over 25 meticulously researched historical novels since 1964. The best known of these are The Roselynde Chronicles (ROSELYNDE, ALINOR, JOANNA, GILLIANE, RHIANNON, and SYBELLE). The series has been reprinted many times since its first appearance in 1979, most recently in 2006. Gellis has also been the recipient of many awards, including the Silver and Gold Medal Porgy for historical novels from West Coast Review of Books, the Golden Certificate and Golden Pen from Affaire de Coeur, The Romantic Times Award for Best Novel in the Medieval Period (more than once) and Lifetime Achievement Award for Historical Fantasy, as well as Romance Writers of America's Lifetime Acheivement Award.

More recently Gellis has ventured into other genres, starting with mythological fantasy (DAZZLING BRIGHTNESS, SHIMMERING SPLENDOR, ENCHANTED FIRE, BULL GOD, and THRICE BOUND). Most recently she has written historical fantasy, with a series of book coauthored by Mercedes Lackey set in Elizabethan times (THIS SCEPTER'D ISLE, ILL MET BY MOONLIGHT, BY SLANDEROUS TONGUES, and AND LESS THAN KIND). Before that she was writing historical mysteries, a four-book series set in London and Oxford in 1139 (A MORTAL BANE, A PERSONAL DEVIL, BONE OF CONTENTION and CHAINS OF FOLLY) and one set in the Italian Renaissance in Ferrara (LUCREZIA BORGIA and the MOTHER OF POISONS).

Since Gellis is one of the early addicts to electronic readers---she purchased a RocketeBook way back in 1999---it is no surprise that she was eager to get her own out of print historical romances into electronic format. Cerridwen Press (http://www.cerridwenpress.com) has published the Heiress Series (THE ENGLISH HEIRESS, THE CORNISH HEIRESS, THE KENT HEIRESS, FORTUNE'S BRIDE, and A WOMAN'S ESTATE) as well as the Royal Dynasty Series (don't ask me about that, there isn't a royal or a dynasty in any of the four books---it was a notion of a long-ago agent) SIREN SONG, WINTER SONG, FIRE SONG, and A SILVER MIRROR. Cerridwen offers a variety of formats, one of which can be read by the Kindle and for those too firmly addicted to paper, the books are also available in a very nice Trade edition (but those are rather expensive).

I'm sorry I don't have any amusing anecdotes to relate, as recommended by the Profile, but a writer's life is really very quiet. Sometimes my neighbors ask my husband what has happened to me because they haven't seen me in such a long time. Depending on his humor of the moment, sometimes Charles tells them that I can't come outside because he keeps me chained to my computer---but that isn't true. He lets me get up once in a while.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank You Ms Gellis, April 27, 2006

The bit of a personal cliffhanger at the end of the third volume of the set, made the determination of her publisher not to pick up the fourth volume in this medieval mystery series particularly distressing. However, Five star stepped into the breach and has brought out Chains of Folly to my great relief.

Once again, Gellis takes the reader to the environs of the Old Priory Guesthouse, run by whoremistress Magdalene who finds herself juggling personal feelings, disturbing political events and her own complicated business as she tries to solve the mystery of the dead prostitute found seated at a table in the Bishop's private apartment.

Gellis' intimate knowledge of medieval life and events makes this a particularly engrossing story.

5.0 out of 5 stars fabulous medieval who-done-it, May 6, 2006
In medieval England, the Bishop of Winchester turns in for the night only to find the corpse of a woman dressed like a whore. He calls for his trusted aid, Sir Bellamy of Itchen, who finds the woman holds a letter from Robert of Gloucester, the enemy of the King, addressed to the Bishop. Bellamy and the Bishop conclude that someone is setting up the religious leader to discredit him on the eve of a religious concave that will probably scold the monarch for his actions against the Bishop of Salisbury.

Reluctantly Bellamy agrees to investigate who would commit homicide to deface the Bishop. He starts his inquiries visiting his estrange former lover Magdalene la Batarde, the whoremistress of the Old Priory Guesthouse as she knows all the girls and their customers. .Her information not given with any cooperation leaves an open field from the king to any one of several nobles coveting the bestowal of royal favorite status, but she and Bell investigate together.

Roberta Gellis, the grand dame of medieval thrillers, is at the top of her game with this terrific historical mystery that uses the homicide and the social pecking order to tell a vivid tale. The story line actually takes off rather quickly with Magdalene on the case from near the start and never takes a break until the climatic confrontation with the knife wielding killer. Fans will appreciate how the sleuthing team knows when to tiptoe with extreme caution and when to smash and crash as who is the recipient of the inquiries is more important than what one learns if the detectives want to keep their heads about them. CHAINS OF FOLLY is a fabulous medieval who-done-it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ms. Gellis in Top Form, January 31, 2006
Following A Mortal Bane; A Personal Devil and Bone of Contention, Chains of Folly is the fourth volume in the Magdalene la Batarde series. Once again Roberta Gellis has written a very well thought out mystery. Her attention to detail and knowledge of the medieval period is superb and extensive. As usual she portrays very believable characters and a convoluted plot. Once began, I couldn't put it down till the last page.
