I'm going to review a movie that doesn't get talked about a whole lot Chains Of Gold. A made for TV movie directed by Rod Holcomb he's done a lot of TV work. Stars John Travolta as Scott Barnes, Bernie Casey as Sergeant Falco, Joey Lawence as Tommy, Marilu Henner as Jackie & Benjamin Bratt as Carlos. Story is Scott Barnes a Social worker puts up with with a lot of BS with his boss at The Social Security Office this old guy can't provide a birth certificate so Scott marks all of his stuff approved when he's wheeled out that old guy flips Scott's boss off. Scott has this family he helps which this boy Tommy is like a son to him & he's been buying expensive stuff he got his older sister a new dress he got his mom a TV Scott wonders where he got the money for the stuff & he told him he found a wallet. 1 day Tommy's sister reports him missing they get a report of a body at the morgue it's not Tommy but he notices this tattoo that is like the 1 Tommy has he goes to the police & this is where we are introduced to Sergeant Falco Scott finds out that it's gang affiliated Sergeant Falco tells him there is nothing he can do Falco is retiring Scott says I can see you don't care cause your retiring you'd rather do gardening. John Travolta & Bernie Casey have a good back & forth. He has to put up with a by the book as s whole cop. He doesn't want to mess up 2 years of work. Scott says are you retiring too. As he leaves he tells Sergeant Falco happy retirement. Falco tells him for the record I hate gardening. You learn Scott has an e x wife & he was an al co h o lic. She left him cause he was driving drunk & he had a wreck he couldn't save his son. He has always felt guilty this is why Tommy is so important to him. His ex wife is an attorney for the gang as it turns out she pulls the strings & gets him a meeting with Carlos the head of the gang. Scott tells Sergeant Falco what's going on why it's so important. Funny piece of dialog where where Bernie Casey asks how much did you pay for this coffee. "Yeah I know it tastes like s h it doesn't it. He goes in finds where Tommy is at Scott's found out & his ex wife is killed when he finds the body John Travolta reaction just sells it for me. He calls Sergeant Falco & tells him it's on. 2 of Carlos's henchies show up he shoots 1 but he's wearing body armor Scott makes a run for it solid stunt work from the roof to the pool great chase the scene on the bridge well done. He tries to flag down a cop but is grabbe. They take him to Carlos who has him thrown down a crocodile pit. He makes his way ou of it & knocks 1 of Carlos's henchies out. Takes his gun. Cops & SWAT attack the place. Carlos tries to escape he tells 1 of his guys to kill the kid Scott shoots the henchy in the head. Carlos tries to kill Scott he's caught off guard they have decent fight considering John Travolta isn't known for his fight skills. He knocks Carlos into the pit great ownage. He saves Tommy outside he asks him how did they all come. Sergeant Falco tells him that by the book cop had a son that was a cop & was undercover & he told him his son was in danger. As he leaves Sergeant Falco say I owe you a good cup of coffee. Chains Of Gold is a solid movie it was filmed in 89 for a theatrical release but was put on TV in 1991. To me it looked theatrical. Rod Holcomb was good with the directing. John Travolta He doesn't play these straight characters he was great. Bernie Casey was great. Joey Lawence was good not annoying. Marliu Hennar wasn't bad. Benjamin Bratt not the best villain he was ok so that's Chains Of Gold maybe I'll review another franchise later.

I hadn't heard of this movie but thought I'd seen everything Travolta had done over the years. I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the writing, acting and directing in this movie. It's old enough that you might happen upon it on a premium movie channel or OnDemand cable, and if you do, give it a watch. I would have paid to see it at a theater but I'm glad I happened across it on Amazon.com instead.

Chains of Gold is one of those movies John Travolta did during his career slump. This one has Travolta as Scott Barnes, a social worker who rescues a kid from a drug-running street gang. Hector Elizondo has a part as Lieutenant Ortega. Silly plot certainly doesn't help this forgettable action movie. Director Rob Holcomb moved on to direct the excellent TV movie 'Finding the Way Home'.

I brought this movie strickly on impulse from my work. It cost me $2.99, brand new (dvd). I'd never seen it before, but was very impressed. I know it is a TV movie, but nonetheless, it is very watchable. I can watch it several more times, in fact. After watching movies like these, you gain respect for independent films. There are bad reviews for this movie out there, but I say hire it out and make up your own mind. A Travolta classic!
