5.0 out of 5 stars Heenan is an Entertaining Man
A self help book from a wrestler is a bit hard to swallow. It is particularly hard to swallow when the wrestler played the role of a crook or con-artist so well. Through his second book, we see a different side of Bobby Heenan. While I would not call it a helpful book, it is entertaining.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cancer Survivor.
The author uses wrestling lingo as a metaphor for life. Entertaining anecdotes and stories made this a fast and funny read. This may not be a self-help book, but I never read one that made me laugh. I am sure his cancer story hit many readers nerves who have lost people or pets to that awful scourge. Mr. Heenan remains the funniest man in the history of the wrestling...

A self help book from a wrestler is a bit hard to swallow. It is particularly hard to swallow when the wrestler played the role of a crook or con-artist so well. Through his second book, we see a different side of Bobby Heenan. While I would not call it a helpful book, it is entertaining.

In "Chair Shots ...", Bobby Heenan uses wrestling terminology as a metaphor for life. As a man with an eighth grade education, working for wrestling companies since his teen years, he has not written anything revolutionary in this book. Much like his first book, there are a lot of entertaining stories and anecdotes. I found them entertaining as a fan of old time wrestling. For the entertainment value of the stories, the book is worth its price.

While I feel this book is inferior to his first book, I enjoyed reading wisdom on life from Bobby Heenan. Few people realize that there is a human being behind the character he played. This is an opportunity to know the character of the real Booby Heenan. My hope for the future is that Heenan puts out a book of his best one-liners and insults from his wrestling career. A book like that would be a must for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Founding Father, March 12, 2004

A great book from one of the Charter Members of the wrestling fraternity. This is infinitely more than a self absorbed memoir of his well documented life. This is about over-coming challenges (in this case cancer)and other things that may surprise. You will also find a plethora of great stories about wrestling itself (Bobby most certainly didn't want to disappoint the core audience). And don't worry, Bobby can still entertain with the best of them, what a fun book.
A must have for not only the Wrestling fan but also for people with personal challenges.
"The Brain" at his best...5 stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Brain Does It Again, March 19, 2004

This review is from: Chair Shots and Other Obstacles: Winning Life's Wrestling Matches (Hardcover)
Bobby Heenan is one of the funniest men alive. Period. Need proof? I submit his assertion that he has been hit in the head with a chair so many times that his head now smells like a**. Bobby is a great story-teller, and this book is a great read. There's a passage in the book where he says that he wanted this book to read like you were sitting around having some beers and just talking with him, and it does. He has overcome some pretty serious obstacles (i.e., throat cancer) with his humor intact, and his advice is that we all embrace the healing power of laughter. Not really groundbreaking stuff, but it's from the heart. The cartoons are great and the last chapter written in character as "The Brain" is awesome ("Some people are so dumb, they can hide their own Easter eggs."). If you cracked up at the antics of Heenan and Monsoon in the WWF or his later commentary with WCW, you're going to love this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny stuff, March 23, 2004

This review is from: Chair Shots and Other Obstacles: Winning Life's Wrestling Matches (Hardcover)
"Chair Shots" is a really funny book with some classic Heenan wit and some really funny stories. Probably the best wrestling book to come out in the last two years. It doesn't appear that cancer has effected his sense of humor!

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting look into a professional wrestlers life, July 13, 2009

My interest in the book was strictly personal. We were friends for many years and I wanted to see how true to life the book was written.

He has been honest and open in reporting which gives his readers a true look into his life. All must agree it has been most interesting !!!!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the biography, May 1, 2006
This review is from: Chair Shots and Other Obstacles: Winning Life's Wrestling Matches (Hardcover)
Bobby Heenan takes to the pages again and presents us with a self-help book. A warning to the wrestling marks, this is not a biography by Heenan. He covers phases of his life from dropping out of school after 8th grade into his career as a heel manager/wrestler and up to his retirement but in no detail covers his life. This is a self-help book through the eyes of maybe the most hated man in wrestling, keeping in mind it is the gimmick of Bobby Heenan, not the man Ray Heenan, that is hated. Heenan, using wrestling metaphors, covers instances in his life and how an average "ham-and-egger" could better themselves from his life lessons. He throws in some brief anecdotes from his career and you might laugh a few times. Overall, this book did little for me and I would have been just as well off if I hadn't read it (and $25 richer). It's readable and enjoyable mostly but Heenan is just all over the place throughout his life and it gets a bit messy, almost as if his entire career took place in 4 years. None-the-less, hardcore fans will buy it, those mark fans wanting a rundown of Heenan's professional career should skip it.

Bobby Heenan was one of the greatest characters in the WWF from the mid-1980's to early 1990's. A funny guy who could use his gift of the gab to make his wrestlers look good and in later years was a humourous colour man.

This book is not a biography like his first (classic) book, it is a self-help book that Heenan wrote after his cancer ordeal. The book itself is ok but I think that if I wanted to read self-help books, I would read one written by a qualified professional.

I enjoyed this book because it really comes from the heart and describes what a miserable life people in the wrestling business can lead. i think he could've been a little more open about some of the people he dealt with and I'd have liked to have heard more about his relationship with Gorilla Monsoon and why he left WWF to go to WCW which ruined his career. But he's still a guy I would love to meet and get to know.
