This combination of two important works on the Joint Chiefs of Staff brings together volumes published in 1995 and 1989 respectively. "The Chairmanship" focuses on military biographies with some incidental institutional history added; "Organizational Development" looks at the institution of the JCS up until its reorganization under the Goldwater-Nichols Act. Despite biographical coverage of the chairmen ending in 1995, both volumes are essential for placing military decisions and conflicts in their correct command context in the period between WWII and Goldwater-Nichols. These works, previously available only in electronic format, are here offered in a handy hardcopy reference edition. Both books were originally published by the JCS.
