5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for anyone willing to look inside themselves
I have been on a journey of trying to find out who I am and why I do things for the past 2 years and out of all the information I have come across, this book explains it in the most simplest form with the simplest understanding. I found this book to be one of the only books so far that really gets to the "heart" of the subjects I wanted to work on within myself...

1.0 out of 5 stars confusion of terms
The tantric teaching of chakras has absolutely nothing to do with archetypes. Chakras and archetypes are entirely separate concepts from entirely different traditions. Please read the works of Arthur Avalon to understand the ancient hindu concept of chakras. Please read Carl Jung to gain a true psychological explanation of archetypes.

I have been on a journey of trying to find out who I am and why I do things for the past 2 years and out of all the information I have come across, this book explains it in the most simplest form with the simplest understanding. I found this book to be one of the only books so far that really gets to the "heart" of the subjects I wanted to work on within myself (and covers all of them!). If you have the courage to look inside and not be afraid of what you find, you can really be on a journey to a more peaceful, fulfilling life. I must go back and read it again so I can practice the exercises and meditations. Excellent book! I'm ordering another one from this author which will expand on my knowledge of unlocking my energies.

4.0 out of 5 stars a good book for beginners, July 2, 2003
This review is from: Chakras and Their Archetypes: Uniting Energy Awareness and Spiritual Growth (Paperback)
Having studied archetypes and chakras, I would definitely recommend this book for anyone in the *beginning* of their study of both archetypes and chakras. That said, there are several things I liked about the book: the clear, concise manner in which terms were defined; the manner in which positive and negative aspects of archetypes were defined and illustrated; and the case histories. There are several other things about this book that I question.

However, my main difference is with Ms. Wauters' somewhat glib characteristics of archetypes; first of Victim and Mother in the root chakra. As a childfree person (who also happens to be a teacher) I always knew I never wanted children, and to me, as an extremely independent, autonomous person, the traditional path of motherhood was a path of victimization, ie, putting everyone's needs before one's own, never taking time for oneself, sacrificing constantly, and never complaining. I understand that she means "nurturer" here. One must remember that not all mothers are nurturers (cf Susan Smith and Andrea Yates as extreme examples), and not all who nurture choose to mother (or to parent, to be more inclusive).

I question also that the Servant is a negative archetype; certainly it's not universally so, as Jesus Christ, Mahatma Ghandi and Mother Teresa certainly knew: to serve others is to empower oneself and others. Certainly martyr service is negative, just as nasty, attitude-filled waitperson-from-hell service is negative. But as one who grew up female in the South and came out of it liberal, independent and feminist, at 35 I see that one may choose to serve, but service does not make one a servant. At least on a first reading of Ms. Wauters' book, I'm not sure this point is made clearly enough.

I also question Ms. Wauters' characterization of the Intellectual archetype as negative, and the Intuitive as positive. Personally as an intellectual, I'd characterize that as positive, and too much intuition without articulation as being negative. One does, of course, need to balance both to be healthy.

I also wonder if Ms. Wauters has read _Awakening the Heroes Within_ by Carolyn Pearson, who offers 12 archetypes, all of which are very fleshed out. (I would recommend the Pearson book for a more thorough study of archetypes.) I wonder, too, if she's done elemental reading in Jung. This book, while good, could have done with a bibliography as well. Overall it is a good beginning along the path of studying archetypes and/or chakras.

This is a great book to introduce you to the chakras and archetypes. It is easy to read and understand, and gives you the tools to look inside your heart and soul in order to know yourself better and change what you believe needs changing. Be honest with yourself when you read it and follow the meditation instructions and you will feel like your life is put back on track.

This is a great book! Very easy to understand and easy flowing. One of the best introduction to the chakras I have read. The power this book has, you look inside your own soul and heart and have the power of control to change and unblock your energies. I enjoyed the meditation instructions and really feel at peace with my own being and those around me.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good psychological view of the chakras, June 30, 2006
This review is from: Chakras and Their Archetypes: Uniting Energy Awareness and Spiritual Growth (Paperback)
This book is excellent for those who would like a more psychological view of the chakras. In this way, it is an excellent reference book for Spiritual Counselors, Licensed therapists who want to add a more spiritual approach to their practice or any other counseling profession. It can also greatly assist those who need help in their own lives and would like to heal by working with their chakras. The author explains the chakras through archetypical patterns which may sound intimidating to some but it is easy reading and everyone will be able to relate to the characteristics presented, either by recognizing it in themselves or the people in their lives.

After the explanation of each chakra and it's corresponding archetype, the author offers 2 case studies so the reader better understands how a chakra dysfunction interplays in their lives. Next, she offers meditations, affirmations, and movements to heal that particular issue. I've read a lot of counseling books, traditional and spiritual, and have found this to be very imformative, useful and very accurate in it's healing methods. I wish it was a required reading for all up and coming counselers and therapists. I wouldn't recommend it for someone who wants a basic or even indepth study of the chakras without the psychological view, as there is heavy emphasis on this.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic empowering tool!, January 31, 2007
This review is from: Chakras and Their Archetypes: Uniting Energy Awareness and Spiritual Growth (Paperback)
This book is a true jewel and gives insights both practically and theoretically on the way chakras and archetypes influence our lives. Ambika has been working with chakras as a healer and refers to many practical cases she had with patients, helping us to understand the different archetypes in our daily life...
Her concise writing style makes this book an easy one to read and comprehend.
Having attended a practical workshop on chakras with a truly unique healer and teacher, I can tell you that chakras are intelligent energy systems within us which hold all information on our past lives and enable us -if we learn to communicate and interact with them- to bring to our awareness some deeply entrenched beliefs and patterns, enabling us to release and dissolve them... You cannot access unconscious beliefs systems without interacting in some ways with your chakras...
The chapter on the Heart Chakras will put the record straight as to what is love and it is essential to remember that as long as we are not able to truly love ourselves, we cannot attract love in our life...
This book is a gift for yourself and is a fantastic empowering tool to help you discover who you truly are... and thank you Ambika for sharing your experience and knowledge with us in such a beautiful and coherent way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Made into a Believer! WOW!, September 28, 2008
This review is from: Chakras and Their Archetypes: Uniting Energy Awareness and Spiritual Growth (Paperback)
This book is excellent for anyone trying to find themselves, gain confidence and love for themselves, and trying to be a better, happier person! This is truly the best book I own!

I have been really surprised by this book. I have been interested and read about many different philosophies and practices about self-awareness and development but I have never felt that any of them were true or useful. None seemed to do as they claimed. So, I've been very skeptical about any of these concepts because I've only seen failure from them. This book on the other hand, has made me a true believer of chakras and the power energy can have. I truly appreciate her honest approach to describing what these energy centers are, how they affect us, and explaining it in a more scientific way and not in the "I have magic to sell you" way that I have seen in other books. Bless her. Whether your looking for chakra information or looking for psychological practices to achieve results, you'll find it in this book.

I can't speak highly enough of this book. It really helped me where everything else seemed to fail. I am thankful.

This review is from: Chakras and Their Archetypes: Uniting Energy Awareness and Spiritual Growth (Paperback)
This book is an excellent review of the chakras and archetypes. It provides real and true remedies for healing through the chakras. The author's description of the archetypes will suit any reader that has a penchant for psychoanalysis and psychotherapy.
Written in easy to understand language, it never gets bogged down in unnecessary details. Excellent.
