2.0 out of 5 stars Provides detailed information about the history of the chakra symbols, October 23, 2005
This review is from: Chakras, Yoga & Consciousness (Paperback)
I obtained this book because I was interested in learning more about the chakra system. In particular, I was hoping that this book would provide exercises designed to stimulate the energy of each of the seven chakras; given the book's title, I expected that yoga practice would be incorporated. Unfortunately, I found that the only yoga included in this book was very basic background information about yogic philosophy--so elementary, in fact, that the Sanskrit names for the principles making up the yogic moral code, the yamas and the niyamas, are not mentioned.

In his discussion of the individual chakras themselves, the author goes to the opposite extreme, presenting information that I believe would be much too esoteric for the average reader. His main focus is on breaking down each of the chakra symbols in great detail, emphasizing in particular the roles of the various gods depicted in the images. There are absolutely no suggestions offered on how engage chakra energy, and despite the title, I walked away from this book with no new knowledge of how to use chakras to balance my life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yet this is the most important information, March 25, 2007
This review is from: Chakras, Yoga & Consciousness (Paperback)
While this book won't give you information on how to balance your chakras, it will give you some of the most accurate information about the tantric chakras themselves and is much easier to get through than sir John Woodroffe's The Serpent Power. This is the original system as it was perceived by the tantrics. It deserves more recognition. Carl Jung's book, The Psychology of Kundalini Yoga is a good companion to this book.
