5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, December 9, 2009

On the bookshelf of natural resource history books, Challenge of the Big Trees is important. Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are extremely important in land management history, particularly in terms of fire management where the prescribed fire and modern fire management was born in the late 1960s. This book looks at a whole range of issues that the NPS has had to deal with at Sequoia, where people love the trees and love their cars but in the past feared fire and feared animals.

Bill Tweed, the primary writer is an excellent writer. He has devoted his life to the park and his mind is organized and clear. This is a great book and one anyone interested in the history of national parks should have.
