Book Description

June 1, 2003 Studies in War, Society, and the Militar
The Challenge of Change examines how military institutions attempted to meet the demands of the new strategic, political, and technological realities of the turbulent era between the First and Second World Wars. The contributors chose France, Germany, Great Britain, the Soviet Union, and the United States as focus countries because their military institutions endeavored to develop both the material capacity and the conceptual framework for the conduct of modern industrialized warfare on a continental scale.

Editorial Reviews

Review

" The Challenge of Change should be mandatory reading for senior military officers and defence analysts as the United States redesigns its military forces and doctrine to face the challenge of the 21st century." Parameters "Examining with a critical eye the notion that innovation is an obvious and easily judged phenomenon, the book is well worth reading for any student or advocate of organizational and doctrinal change." Foreign Affairs "I strongly recommend this work to both the generalist and the specialist as a wonderfully condensed source for the central arguments found in the several authors' various books on this era." Journal of Military History "The Challenge of Change is a worthwhile addition to the field not only for its solid historical analysis, but also for the appeal it will have for a wider audience." National Securities Studies Quarterly. "The Challenge of Change includes a collection of well-researched and well-written historical essays analyzing the dynamics of military reform in the major Western powers between the two world wars. These essays provide valuable insights into the overall process of changing military institutions. This is a superb book." Robert A. Doughty, head of the Department of History, United States Military Academy.
