Just what I was looking for...,
By A Customer
This review is from: Challenge Math for the Elementary & Middle School Student (Paperback)
This book really saved me! In my first year of teaching a 5th grade class of gifted/high achieving math students I struggled to find the right resource to adequately challenge the students. I particularly liked this book because each unit (chapter) is all-inclusive. There is a great lesson at the beginning followed by practice and then three levels of questions. The only supplement I needed to create was a method of assessing my students. I highly recommend this book to any parent or teacher looking for a math challenge for students.

I teach 6th grade math and recommend Challenge Math to any level student. I taught skills close to or exactly as the recommended textbook. The results that I received were not that great and the students were still confused. I checked out Challenge Math from the school's media center and did not want to return it at the end of the school year. Both my students and myself loved this book. True enough the graphics are poor but the strategies used for each concept are wonderful. The concepts were explained with the novice learner in mind. The activities are also based on three different achievement levels. I prefered to use this book as opposed to the textbook. This book is certainly a book that I will continue using.

Excellent, Comprehensive,
This review is from: Challenge Math For the Elementary and Middle School Student (Second Edition) (Paperback)
I run a math club for a group of 5th graders (one 6th grader). When I found this book, I knew I had an excellent curriculum to offer them. We've been using this and Real World Algebra and the kids have responded well to both. They *like* the silly cartoons. The author has taken concepts that are generally saved for older kids (and can be dry and tedious) and made them accessible to a younger age group. This is the ideal solution if your bright or gifted child needs more challenge, but standard texts just don't cut it.

To me this is the best math book ever in the market. My 9 year old son started few months ago, learn the fun way of doing math, along came the excitement and the joy of discovery the mystery of math. Highly recommeded for school teachers who look for ways to bring excitement to math class.

This book really delivers what it promises - it is the music of math - not just the scales. My eleven year old son and I have been working through the book and having a great time. He has a teacher this year who really doesn't know how to teach gifted kids math and this book has been a lifesaver. Some of the concepts are fairly simple but as you work through how to apply them with increasing difficulty to some real-world problems then it does get you thinking. I highly recommend this book for all students - it is really the way math should be taught.

I teach a class of identified Highly Capable 5th graders, some of whom function at least 2 years above in math ability. The strands in this book have been very useful in differentiating my math curriculum. The kids enjoy the work and tackle the "Einstein" level with great zeal. It has proven to be well worth purchasing.

One of the best book I bought for my 4th grader. Great math methods taught through out the book, even 4th grader can start reading it. The book provides many levels questions after each method, which suits all kids in different learning stage. This book will last till middle school, a good investment!

I bought this book for my kids. They enjoy reading it and solving the problems in it. They can have their own pace and solving problems at their own level without getting frustrated. It's a great book for kids who love math and like to challenge themselve.

My 8th grader is using this to prep for a test. Each chapter has three sets/levels - Level 1, Level 2, and then Einstein Level. We found that the Einstein Level wasn't any different than the Level 2, and Level 2 was not very far off from Level 1. In the usual American style, they try to simplify the topic with lots of funky pictures - which I guess is being done to counter 'math anxiety' , but the drawing style will probably put off the typical middle-schooler.
Still the coverage of topics is not bad, and the book has proved quite useful for drill-work. Each person's mileage would vary. I would give this book a 3-and-half if I could.
