4.0 out of 5 stars Great for children
I read these books when I was in fifth and sixth grade. They are all kind of formulaic and predictable to anyone 13 years of age and older but they are great for younger children. I recommend these books for child that you want to start reading more. They are easy reads and teach great lessons like team work, accepting differences in people and sportsmanship. They can...

I would recommend this book to some who loves baseball because this book has a lot of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Book EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, March 30, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Challenge at Second Base (Matt Christopher Sports Classics) (Paperback)
I like "challenge at second base" becasue its action, its suspensful, its a book that when you read a page you cant wait to turn the other. I like this book because it's about baseball and baseball is my life. It is about this kid Stan wanting to play second base but Gary Newman wants to also. At first the raiders start of the season with a win and Gary Newman started the game at second base but when they got more in the season Stan became really good even better then Gary and the coach had put him to start in the final game of the season also in the championship that they accomplished to get to. They are both good so this book keeps you in suspense. I also like this book because its a book that you dont want to stop reading and you want to know what happends but you will have to wait to find out. I love this book and theres no reason for you not to love it too!

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Challenge at Second Base (Matt Christopher Sports Classics) (Paperback)
I would recommend this book to some who loves baseball because this book has a lot of it.

This book is about a boy named Stan who is competing for a spot on second base against Gary Newman. Gary is very good but so is Stan. In the beginning of the season, Stan was horrible and Gary was hot! After a while Stan kicked it into gear after he got a mysterious letter that said," u can do it. Don't quit".
Stan took his place at second base and moved Gary shortstop. The team ended the season with a record of 8 wins 7 loses. Stan finally found out who was sending him the secret letters. It was his sister Dottie and her boy friend Jeff. Stan's brother Phil became a major league baseball player for Newport. Stan was so proud.

I liked this story because it was about baseball and fighting for a position. That is what I do a lot.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Challenge at Second Base (Matt Christopher Sports Classics) (Paperback)
I read the book Challenge at Second Base by Matt Christofer. I read it as a W.E.B book. It was about a kid,Stan, who almost missed the sign up date for baseball. He plays second base and gets a challenge for his position by a new kid,Gary, that is very good at baseball. Stans brother used to play baseball but quit because it was getting too intense. Stan gets strange notes about not quiting. He also loves to buils models. He is thinking about giving up baseball to build models. Will he do it? Read the book and find out.

4.0 out of 5 stars A story about building confidence that happens to be about baseball, July 11, 2009
This review is from: Challenge at Second Base (Matt Christopher Sports Classics) (Paperback)
Stan Martin loves baseball and his position is second base. However, the other second baseman, a boy named Gary, appears to be the better player. Gary's brother works with him constantly, hitting him grounder after grounder so that he may hone his skills. Stan's situation is different; his brother Phil was playing professional baseball until he suddenly quit. Phil now shows no interest in working with Stan, a fact that Stan dislikes and carries over into his performance on the field.
While this book is about baseball, the main theme is about confidence and perseverance. Phil and Stan suffer from the same affliction, a lack of confidence that sends them into a deep funk. This is the reason why Phil quit playing and the primary reason why Stan struggles. Fortunately, Stan's coach is wise enough to recognize Stan's talents and he is given the chances he needs to find his way to success. Phil also finally gets his head in the right place and rejoins his professional team.
In any field of endeavor, confidence in your ability to succeed is the most necessary precondition to success. This story is about gaining that confidence, which makes it a good story about life that just happens to be about baseball.
