Review
1. "Challenging Sudden Death is the only publication that brings together in one volume all of the varieties of resources available to communities to confront the problem of needless and premature death from sudden cardiac arrest," according to Roger D. White, MD, of the Mayo Medical School in Rochester, Minnesota, who serves as Medical Director of the City of Rochester Police Department Early Defibrillation Program. "This book provides very specific guidelines for communities to utilize, which in many cases center on mobilizing already existing but unused resources. Included are several examples of cardiac arrest victims who were resuscitated in their communities and returned to their families and workplaces, in each case by equipping with defibrillators agencies such as police and fire departments whose rapid response can make all the difference in restoring life in sudden and unexpected cardiac arrest," said White. "I wish that every mayor and city council in every ! city in the United States had access to what this book has to say." 2. "This new guide is a very timely, practical, useful Bible for communities to use in upgrading their Chain of Survival," said Joseph P. Ornato, MD, FACC, FACEP, Professor & Chairman, Department of Emergency Medicine, Medical College of Virginia, and Medical Director for the Richmond Ambulance Authority.3. "Challenging Sudden Death is remarkably understandable and comprehensive," according to Myron L. Weisfeldt, MD, Past President and Chairman of the American Heart Association Task Force on Automatic Defibrillation, and Chairman of the Department of Medicine, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. "Mary Newman and Jim Christensen present a simple, compelling picture of the value of community-based programs of automated defibrillation. They also present a straightforward step-by-step guide to public and rescuer education."4. "Challenging Sudden Death provides a community strategy for dealin! g with the epidemic of sudden and unexpected cardiac arrest," said Mickey Eisenberg, MD, PhD, Director, Emergency Medicine Service, University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle. "This book is a lifesaver." --
