I bought this book at a local bookstore on a whim and it is now a treasured addition to our Spanish bedtime book corner. My husband is Argentine and says of all the books we have bought in the States in Spanish, this is his favorite.

Eduaro Polo plays with words with the same manaical glee and verbal genius as Dr. Seuss, and there are a ton of puns and plays on words that elude me as a non-native speaker. Our three-year-old son asks his Papá to read the "broken word" book, and he requests many of the stories over and over, gaining more from them with each reading. That is what a truly great children's book should offer, and this one does it in spades.

(from La Bicicleta)
El ferro sigue el carril
por el alti casi plano,
como el pere sigue al jil
y el otoño a su verano

(from El Hipopótamo)
El hipopó tamo-tamo
y el elefán fan-fan
dentro de un mismo pantano
bailando juntos están.
(...)
La danza de los obesos
tiene una gracia sutil;
la melodía es melodil
y las tristezas, tristezos.

The illustrations by Arnal Ballester are hip and filled with whimsy. Be forewarned that two of the illustrations have characters smoking: a pipe in one and a cigarette in the other. I don't think that should stop you from buying the book--just use it as a learning moment.

I recommend this book highly to anyone raising a child who speaks Spanish, and we have purchased it for our friends and relatives, even taking it back to Argentina with us on our last trip. My mother-in-law, an expert on bilingual education, was enchanted with the book. We were so happy to find it on Amazon. Buy it now!

I LOVE this book - as a Hispanic mom, I really struggle to find children's books that are actually written in Spanish. There's nothing wrong with translations, per se, but - a Dr. Seuss book in Spanish just isn't really the same Dr. Seuss book.

This little gem is AWESOME! Includes the same silly rhyming style, but was originally written in Spanish! So the silliness is genuine - I love that. I would highly recommend this to moms who are trying to introduce Spanish books in their households. I will, however, admit that if you're not a native Spanish speaker, some stuff might not make sense - I am a native speaker, and still there are some things that I had to sleuth out a bit, since this writer is from another country - just like you really need to know English to get some of the 'silliness' in Dr. Seuss books - you'll need to really know Spanish to get some of the 'silliness' in this book, and be able to ask around a bit if needed, as well. But the fun is there regardless!!

Another one that I absolutely love is 'Zoologico de poemas' by Margarita Montalvo http://www.amazon.com/dp/0439706815/?tag=googhydr-20&hvadid=6745055781&hvpos=1t1&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=1936813231350341494&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=b&ref=pd_sl_7g9p14d2vt_b

Margarita writes her poems in both English and Spanish!

Enjoy!

A beautiful little book that my kids and me enjoy so much reading together. Simple verses that you read as if you were playing. It is my kids favorite poetry book, and I am sure that they will keep it close forever (in fact, I have bought one for each one of my three girls)
