4.0 out of 5 stars Claire Would Be Pleased, July 25, 2011
This review is from: Chamber Jazz (Audio CD)
I purchased this on vinyl when it was released and had to buy the CD when it became available. The reason is that this release contains a wonderful samba adaptation of DeBussy's Clair de Lune. Laurindo Almeida knew how to maximize the beauty of an acoustic guitar and his version of Clair de Lune does not disappoint. The bass playing was aggressive and it required patience to adapt to it, but Bob Magnusson knew what he was doing and the interaction with the guitar worked extremely well. I rate this as one of Almeida's better efforts. Some of his material from the 1960s was, to my ears, over-orchestrated and buried the beauty of his instrument. Fortunately, he worked as part of a trio here so that the listener can actually enjoy the guitar.
