More than 7000 entries, regarding chamber-music pieces written between 1600 and 1992 and employing as few as three and as many as 20 instruments, comprise the most comprehensive survey currently available. Arranged alphabetically by composer in two sections (pre-1800 and post-1800), each entry includes title of piece, key signature, year of completion, and ensemble instrumentation. A concluding master index cross-tabulates composers and pieces by number of instruments required; however, locating pieces that require specific instruments (e.g., a violin, viola, and piano) is complicated. Although not exhaustive, this is an excellent quick-and-dirty guide to the field, particularly for recent works. A welcome addition for all music collections holding the three-volume Cobbett's Cyclopedic Survey of Chamber Music (Oxford Univ. Pr., 1987. 2d ed.) and the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians ( LJ 12/15/80).
