The Finnish composer Kalevi Aho is widely known for his symphonies, a cycle in which he's already up to number sixteen. But over the years Aho has also written three symphonic works for strings, and these Chamber Symphonies 1-3 are finally recorded here with the Tapiola Sinfonietta, one of the Helsinki area's several ensembles, conducted by either Stefan Asbury or Jean-Jacques Kantorow. This is a hybrid SACD.

The Chamber Symphony No. 1 (1976) was written as Aho was leaving behind the Shostakovich-inspired music of his youth and entering a complex and turbulent phase. That complexity is not so much that of the avant-garde as simply heavily layering the tonal material he was already working with. The music is sometimes multidimensional, pulling apart in several directions at once. But the climax of the work comes with a long ostinato through which the music breaks down. A ghostly epilogue tours the wreckage and then evaporates into the high strings ("as if echoing the song of strange, imaginary birds" says the composer). Recommended to fans of Schnittke.

Aho's style changed greatly over the course of the 1980s, leaving behind both the Shostakovich vibe and the vast, angry proportions of the first chamber symphony. When he finally returned to this form with the Chamber Symphony No. 2 (1991-1992), the music was more concentrated, though still maintaining a tonal basis. It opens with the high strings playing icy lines, marked by glissandi, against which a rhythmic motif appears in the low strings. A sense of great tension persists through the first two moments, only to explode in the attaca third movement, marked "Furioso".
