This review is from: Chamber Works (Audio CD)
Mozart certainly was blessed with an outstanding mind and gift for flowing, moving music, and these five offerings from Jeremy Polmear with the Ambache Chamber Ensemble are eloquent.

Polmear is founder of Oboe Classics which is turning out some great oboe works. He is featured on this offering of Mozart Chamber works, which are all crisp and clear recordings with the Ambache Chamber Ensemble which passionately provides the accompaniment.

The opening Quartet and Sonata was inspired by his friend, the oboist Ramm. It was said that Ramm impressed Mozart by his pure tone, and Polmear and this piece certainly exhibit this masterfully. It is lilty and seductive.

The Qunitet in C was originally for a blind glass harmonica virtuoso friend of Mozart's. On this recording it is played on the piano, which reminds one of a tiny ballerina, floating around on a winterlake scene. Here the oboe acts as a second flute, delicately giving harmonic strength to the piano. Reminds one of brilliant, tiny white lights, sparkling and alternately shining on a frosty, glistening iced tree.

The liner notes state in a letter to his father concerning the first performance of the Quintet for Piano and Winds in E Flat that "the best work I have ever composed." Possibly he was referring to the balance it maintains among the instruments, highlighting perfectly each instrument's timbre and range, yet achieving integrated whole sound. His weaving and musical twists delight and marvel.

The more stately Adagio K580a was most likely written for clarinet, but here masterfully played on cor anglais. It's rich and sultry sound is perfect for this dignified, pastoral piece. There is much to enjoy of this soothing, warm piece.

This CD truly offers variety of excellent chamber music. Suggest many check it out along with the other unique offerings at Oboe Classics.
