Works as described. Great Unit for kids,

Homedepot had a great online deal for October 2009. Purchased for $18+ shipping and tax.Easy install. Programmed the fingerprint's of my children between the ages of 5 to 10 years old . My 3 year old's finger would not register, I think his finger was just too small. Basically it comes in 2 pieces. One is the base unit powered by 120V AC and you will need to hard wire it to your garage door opener. Ample wire is supplied for the job. You will need a screw driver and wire strippers. The second piece is you wireless remote door opener. This is where you scan the fingerprint you wish registered to open your garage door. It states you can add 10 finger prints . I entered 5 fingerprints and they all worked as required. When you register a fingerprint you need to scan the fingerprint 3 times. To program the remote to the base unit you will need to press a button on the base unit and run your fingerprint on the remote. I called my neighbor to try and scan his fingerprint and sure enough the unit denied his entry attempt. So I am a happy chapee.. Such Great deal for such a solid product. No numbersto remember!!! Another reviewer reports that this unit is not secure because a intruder can perform a so called *factory-reset* on the outside door remote and gain entrance to the garage. This is simply not true and is unfair to the product. Once you reset the remote unit you will need to re-program the remote to the base unit which in that case requires you to be already -inside- the garage. The factory reset potion renders your outside wireless door opener useless and your garage door will stays closed. That reviewer to be fair should retract the portion of his/her review.

I like it...,

Happy enough with the first one that I ordered another (not thru Amazon - please don't tell :# - but I use their reviews, and buy stuff here frequently, so I'd like to contribute#. UNIX Guru is right, I see no serious security issues. Codes #fingerprints) could be dumped from outside but not reset without resetting the box inside. If MSB has that unit outdoors, he/she did not install it properly. Regardless, I think MSB is wrong, too. Also, know that the indoor unit #which plugs in to house current) provides an additional opening button, so with an outlet near the overhead door, I no longer have to walk across the garage to open or close it. I do have some concern as to how well this thing will work in the extreme hot and cold. It also seemed once to dump all of the codes (fingerprints) for some unknown reason, requiring a complete reset. Time (and temp) will tell how it hold up, but so far, so good.

This is a great device for families with children. Easy to use, I don't need a key when walking the dogs or going out and about in the neighborhood. Also love the fact that my kids won't get locked out. Easy to install and program. Only took about 10 minutes to get it up and running.

Love this product. I hate having to remember different codes and passwords so this makes it real easy. It takes a secod or two longer for this to read the fingerprint but it is well worth it. My only wish is that it had a backup key pad just in case you smash your reading finger with a hammer or something, which happened to me and I couldn't get into my garage for a couple of days.

The fingerprint recognition is not very accurate, so it takes 3 to 5 swipes of my finger before it recognizes me. By contrast, my notebook PC gets it right every time.On the other hand, this device was reasonably priced and easy to install.

Works but fussy,

Do not expect this to work as well as most laptop fingerprint scanners. It takes 2-3 swipes to register. My 8 year old can do it but smaller fingers don't register very well.

It's OK. Great for kids who keep loosing key. Hard to program. Have to try programming several times until get it right. Users sometimes has to swipe many times to get the device to recongize a valid user. Its been in use for 2 months in bitter cold weather. Would like to see soemthing that cover closes automatically because kid forgets to shut the cover when not using it. Perhaps, I take cover off and grind a "tab" off so it can close by itself to protect sensor from elements.Note to other users about it not being secure: 1) in order to enroll people - door has to be open to access inside reciever that is attached to opener and a "master user" (that is me) has to "log in" first to enroll other users. If you reset all, then no-one can get in including "master user" unless if the door is open already and reciever is set to program the master user first then enroll others. 2) you can buy any brand automatic garage door closer to attach to opener itself to automatically shut the garage door if already open after certain programmed time has elapsed. My kid is older kid and knows to shut the door when leaving the house or entering the house. I dont think Chamberlain is making this anymore which is too bad. Very reasonable price.

The opener works well. Now, my kids can enter the house without the use of a key or a code to try to remember. I don't have to worry about the kids giving out a code to any unauthorized people. It is a secure system so that even if any unauthorized users try to reprogram it to use their own fingerprints, it will not work.

Simple, but *NOT* secure...,
By MSB (MN) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Chamberlain 942FP Wireless Fingerprint Keyless Entry (Tools & Home Improvement)
I purchased this so that my 1st grade child could get into the house after school and I didn't have to worry about them losing a house key or not remembering a PIN number. For this purpose, it works great! He was able to get his finger print recognized really easy, and has access to the home when I'm running late to meet him after school. However, beware that it is alarmingly easy for ANYONE to do a factory reset of the device and enroll their own fingerprint!!! If you are looking for a SECURE option, this is not it! For me, peace of mind that my child can get into the garage after school when I'm not there is worth the purchase. For security, I'm now going to have to look at fingerprint based door lock for the garage door into the house. I'll be curious to see how well the fingerprint reader works in the MN winter with all the moisture in the air... Pros: . super easy to install (took less than 10-min) . easy to configure device to read fingerprints (about 2-min per person) Cons: . NOT SECURE! Requires: Note...though the outside control panel is wireless and runs on batteries, the receiver must plug into an electrical socket. I plugged mine into the open socket on the outlet that my garage door-opener is plugged into. |
