5.0 out of 5 stars Another legend who never got his full do !, July 13, 2007
This review is from: Chamblee Music (Audio CD)
Eddie Chamblee's playing defies description... literally...
No matter what you say about his music (besides the fact that its swings, is vividly tasteful and is soulful) paints only a partial picture...
as an example, he honks and wails and has a big, fat, warm, bluesy Texas Tenor type tone - - true... but at the same time there's a creative and refined element to his playing - - It never breaks his groove or feel, but makes you think, and is often stuff you wouldn't expect to hear from someone with a feel and tone that's so... how can I say it? ...nasty!
In fact... imagine stuffing Stan Getz up the rear of Gene Ammons or Arnett Cobb... and shoving in a little Earl Bostic as a chaser... maybe that's a good description... His music invokes both the older swinging Jazz of the 30's and 40's, tasty Bop (Dizzy big band style), rock and roll of the 50's... and his arrangements even anticipate the birth of the cool... Rhythm section is particulary bright and cooking...
There's also a distinct clever yet swanky hipness to his arrangements... (The intelligence shouldn't be surprising... he did go to law school!)
Overall sound is great to... (Well no wonder... its on Mercury.)
Ahhhh yes...the horn accompaniments are... yeah... CHAMBLEE MUSIC... Some really intricate, thoughtful, down to earth yet off center call and responses... Arrangements aren't just jammed through, but there is a lot of color and expression... Again, Chamblee defies description... he can honk and wail one second... the next he's Dexter.
Don't believe me... get the album... If you listen with your feet and heart you'll agree with me it may be one of the most under-rated Jazz recordings of all time...

B-3 fans... Check out his ROCKIN' TENOR SAX OF EDDIE CHAMBLEE w/ DAYTON SELBY... You can really smell the grease, grits and groove on that one!
