Book Description

Nothing is ever dull in the Kraken’s Caribbean, at least not for very long. Emily is settling into life with her new husband in this strange new world when things heat up again! A zeppelin sighting opens the door into another realm and unlocks the gate to Captain Jezebel’s past, barricaded for decades.

The denizens of Tortuga must band together to save their world from an invasion that threatens to destroy everything they hold dear and when Jezebel disappears, Emily and the motley crew of the Cursed Quill risk everything to travel to a world where greed is king and lives chattel for the Directors and their pet scientists.

Jezebel is thrust back into the horror of her childhood, and the carefully constructed walls protecting her mind crumble. Her life in the Caribbean, her relationship with Mick…her very sanity, hang in the balance. Novan has come for their lost daughter and all her stolen inventions. What can a 17th century pirate ship do against a military airship? Even with the great Albino Kraken at their side?

5.0 out of 5 stars Rollicking Fun and MORE! January 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
First and foremost, Betita's world building is superb! Not only is the Kraken's Caribbean a fun and unique concept, but the author skillfully fleshes it out in wonderful detail.

I knew this would be a rollicking adventure tale and I was definitely not disappointed. The action is fast-paced and edge-of-the-seat exciting -- a real page turner. In fact, this story would have been enjoyable as simply an action adventure tale, but the author went one step further and threw in complex character development that was both unexpected and satisfying. She skillfully weaves in backstory and internal conflict that touches on not just the relationship between lovers, but also between friends, captain and crew, siblings, and even parent and child. Betita doesn't shy away from either physical or psychological conflict and as a result I (the reader) cared deeply about these characters and their journey.

I am eager to read more from this talented author, especially other stories set in this wonderful, magical setting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Done October 23, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I read all three of the Krakens series and when finished I wrote the author begging for more. Maureen gave all her characters life. While all writers try to achieve this, this author mastered it. When I first read the description of the 1st in this trilogy THE KRAKENS MIRROR I admit being put off by it meaning that sea monsters, voodoo, warewolves, and vampires wasn't exactly my cup of tea when it comes to a pirate romance. Somehow her genius shines through putting it all together for an outstanding story that kept me turning pages until I read all three books in as-as many days. Continuity flows with no hiccups at all. Some of the love scenes were a little erotic and heavy heated at times especially the first book but given the depth of these characters it goes without saying it fit perfectly with their style. I will definitely hands down recommend these books to all adults but highly suggest to read them in order. Do not expect your everyday run of the mill type of pirate romance for these books were not written with that in mind. Do expect romance thrown in with adventure, sea battles, sea monsters, and yes vampires, warewolves, magic and voodoo and sci -fi that Maureen intricately woven into entertainment at its best. Keep an open mind and you wont be disappointed in the least.

More About the Author

Maureen is a writer living on the central coast of California, specifically the wondrous Monterey Bay. Her specialty is romantic adventure stories featuring thoughtful heroines, offbeat heroes and settings that range from the Caribbean Sea to alien worlds. At the core to every story she writes are 2nd chances.

In April of 2007, she nearly died. Her heart stopped and only the quick action of her husband saw her wake in a hospital bed days later, alive and completely bewildered as to what had happened. The doctors called it sudden cardiac death. Maureen now has an implanted defibrillator in case it occurs again. She was fortunate to survive and knows it. In being given a 2nd chance with her life, she dedicated herself to fulfilling the dream of being a published writer.

One goal down, more to come!

Maureen is also known as 2nd Chance and blogs every other Friday on the Romance Writers Revenge, a blog of pirate loving writers who believe in pirates. And in writing about pirates. And in romance, and writing about things other than pirates. But mainly, pirates.
