Editorial Reviews

The lead composition, Chameleon, from Herbie Hancock s 1973 landmark Head Hunters serves, in part, as the signifying reference for Harvey Mason s new CD. Not only did Mason provide the rhythmic spank for the jazz-funk staple, he co-wrote it with Hancock along with several other bandmates Paul Jackson and reedist Bennie Maupin. Chameleon features some of the brightest young jazz talents on the scene today: NEXT Collective alumni such as trumpeter Christian Scott, bassist Ben Williams, pianist/keyboardist Kris Bowers, guitarist Matthew Stevens, trombonist/vocalist Corey CK King, saxophonist Kamasi Washington, vocalist Chris Turner, and keyboardist/electronica producer, Mark de Clive-Lowe. Helping Harvey steer this cooperative are some of his contemporaries - bassist and co-founder of the legendary Yellowjackets, Jimmy Haslip; percussionist and founder of Los Hombres El Caliente, Bill Summers; and bassist Paul Jackson (Summers and Jackson having worked with Mason on the original Head Hunters).

Besides being the mainstay drummer of Fourplay (who has sold millions of albums, to date), Harvey has also worked with Barbra Streisand, James Brown, Herbie Hancock, Beyonce, Christina Aguilera, Usher, Jennifer Hudson, Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Bjork, Carlos Santana, Michael Jackson, John Legend, Seal, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He has composed and written songs recorded by artists ranging from Nancy Wilson and Mary J. Blige to The Notorious B.I.G., Lupe Fiasco, Nelly/P. Diddy and T.I.

Only in recent years have I come to realize just how significant Harvey Mason is to the progression of jazz-funk on through "chill" and into the modern expansive era of the jazz idiom. As a drummer, being a band leader was an inevitability because of that age old tradition of the drummer leading the marching band during the ragtime era-or even as a communicative instrument in Africa. Having been a founding member of Bob James' 90's era super group Fourplay,Harvey has continued the occasional solo and ongoing session work as he had always done. Realizing the nature of his talent as a musician of many musical colors,Harvey put together a new group called Chameleon which consisted of himself, sax player Kamasi Washington, keyboardist Corey King,Jimmy Haslip on bass and classic Headhunters era percussion Bill Summers in the mix. This album serves both as a Harvey Mason release and an introduction to the new band as well.

"Black Frost" takes Bob James' composition into a place where all of the instrumentation revolves around Mason's spiraling drum sound. Bobby Hutcherson's "Mantara" gives a similarly involved workout to a very complex yet compelling melody. "If I Ever Lose This Heaven",long associated with Quincy Jones funkiest years has a single vocalist for this occasion in the somewhat more contemporary Chris Turner. "Looking Back" and especially "Mase's Theme" are both just over one minute interludes that showcase a full on return to the driving, clavinet driven Headhunters style of jazz funk while Patrice Rushen's "Before The Dawn" allows for the band and Harvey to groove in a softer manner belying the intensity of the dynamic composition. Donald Byrd's "Places And Spaces",featuring vocals from Corey King again focuses on the spiritual, avante garde end of the jazz-funk genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Harvey's best, by far April 30, 2014
Format:Audio CD
Harvey Mason has a long & storied history, and somehow, Chameleon exhibits that in the most entertaining and enjoyable way. The album reflects back to the jazz-funk sound of his time spent with Herbie Hancock's Head Hunters, yet updates it to modern times with some of the top-notch young jazz musicians on the scene today (i.e. Ben Williams, Christian Scott, Matthew Stevens, Kris Bowers, etc.). This is such a great listen, and rises head and shoulders above any of Mr. Mason's previous solo outings. Hear hear (NOW!)
p.s. Cool cover art.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best I've heard in a long time May 1, 2014
Format:Audio CD
Grammy-nominated drummer Harvey Mason has released Chameleon today, a CD that backtracks into some of the hottest jazz and fusion tracks from the '70s.

Harvey has employed the talents of some of the industry's brightest young stars as well as their pre-generation counterparts to help him on this musical journey.

The CD includes guest performances by trumpeter Christian Scott, bassist Ben Williams, pianist/keyboardist Kris Bowers and guitarist Matthew Stevens. Also representing the look of 21st century jazz are trombonist and vocalist Corey King, sax player Kamasi Washington, vocalist Chris Turner and keyboardist Mark de Clive-Lowe.

Not to be outdone, the list of musicians representing the "old school" era are also heavy-hitters. They include Yellowjackets' bassist Jimmy Haslip, bassist Paul Jackson and percussionist Bill Summers.

Together these musicians bring ideas of the past and today's sound making for a CD that is solid, joyous and a treat for all who listen.

The music included on this compilation is near and dear to Harvey. In a recent interview he was quoted as saying that Chameleon contains tracks that he either co-produced and wrote or have appeared on.

The concept behind Chameleon goes far more than it being the title track that Harvey worked on with and for Herbie Hancock. It also describes Harvey's diverse nature in the industry; a musician who has been involved in many genres including pop R&B, country, Latin and hip hop.

If you can remember some of your favorite 70s jazz and funk fusion sounds, you may be surprised to find them on here. De-constructed as they may be, the tracks here still hold the essence of its original form in terms of its beauty and grace.

5.0 out of 5 stars A new spin on the old school April 30, 2014
Format:Audio CD
Before getting into Harvey Mason, I was a fan of his son (Harvey Jr.) who does a lot of production for music and movie soundtracks. While doing a search for Jr's work, I stumbled across this little gem from his father. I now realize how much musical wisdom Harvey Mason Sr. was able to impart to his son. Chameleon harkens back to the old days off jazzy funk fusion a la Herbie Hancock and Quincy Jones. There are a few original songs here, along with covers of classic tunes like Bobby Hutcherson's "Montara" - which is another classic tune sampled by new school producers like Madlib. Very inspired and inspiring album overall, especially if you're a fan of jazz from the 70's-80's. Check it out!
