5.0 out of 5 stars A Much-Needed Antidote to Current Teaching, April 4, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Chameleon Readers: Teaching Children to Appreciate All Kinds of Good Stories (Paperback)
Students of children's literature learn about "good stories" without being taught that this construct is actually a description of European traditional forms. To judge the narrative forms of other groups (Asian, Latino, African-American, or Indian) by this yardstick is unfair and absurd. CHAMELEON READERS presents separate chapters on each narrative style, with fascinating examples from research and suggestions for further investigation. It is useful both for teachers who have classrooms full of children from widely varying backgrounds, and for students of children's literature. It may change the way you listen to someone tell a story.
