My husband is from Guam and I purchased this in an effort to teach both our Son and my Husband. It's great for phrases to learn here and there, greetings, foods, colors etc. The pictures make it very easy to understand, I love this book

This review is from: Chamorro Word Book with CD (Audio) (Rainbow Book Series) (Paperback)
I bought this book with the intent to further understand what my aunties and mom would talk about when they would converse strictly in Chamorro with one another. This is a good starting point for anyone willing to learn. It goes over basics such as shapes, family members, animals, foods, body parts, mainly the things you would learn first in any language. There's also an English to Chamorro and Chamorro to English glossary in the back. For those who do not readily speak the language, but have familiarity with how words are pronounced in Spanish - you'll quickly pick up pronunciation. Though with Chamorro having several different dialects spoken, certain words that I found on the audio CD seemed out of sync to what I've heard growing up, but I don't think that would deter the learning process, in fact I think it helps identify what others are saying even if it sounds somewhat different than what you're use to hearing. Also there are times where trying to follow along to the audio and in the book seem rather quick, but it's nothing you can't go over and listen to again. Therefore if it's being repeated it should soon stick. I would recommend this book to anyone who's deciding to visit Guam for the first time, is Guamanian and may need to brush up on their language, or who's like me and grew up not knowing the language, but wanted to learn. |
