i was nervous that this album would disappoint in comparison to Elephant Shell, but i was very pleasantly surprised. Tokyo Police Club may have topped themselves with this one. the entire album is outstanding and original! stand out track: "Favourite Food"

"Catchiness" is funny thing to me, because as easy to love as it is, its also kind of cheap. "Champ" is more complex, more understated than the previous album, "Elephant shell", but its also not as catchy. "Champ" includes some slower, more sentimental songs that are new for the band, such as "Favorite Food" "Breakneck Speed" and "Hands Reversed". The more upbeat songs like "Favorite Color" "Frankenstein" and "Bambi" are all well-written and fun, but still aren't as gritty and upbeat songs from the last album.
Overall, really smart band and both albums are 5 stars.

Solid for a few months,

There was a lot of hype involved with this new album. I expected a lot more from the singles (Wait Up and Breakneck Speed), even though the album is solid and very enjoyable the first few months, it gets a bit repetitive after a while. Tracks like Favourite Color, Bambi, Wait Up and Breakneck Speed are worth been mentioned, but some like End of a Spark and Hands Reversed are rather forgettable, unfortunately.
If I could rate each song separately it would've been something like this: Favourite Food: 8/10 Favourite Color: 8.5/10 Wait Up (Boots of Danger): 9/10 Bambi: 8/10 End of a Spark: 6.5/10 Hands Reversed: 6/10 Gone: 7/10 Big Difference: 8.5/10 Not Sick: 7.5/10 Frankenstein: 6.5/10 If you are expecting something like Lesson in crime or Smith EP you will be disappointed, they have gone from experimental to a bit pop, is an advanced pop direction first taken by Elephant Shell, if you were not a fan from the beginning then you will probably like even more this album.

How have I missed out on this group? This album is the best album I've heard in a long time. There's not a single song here I don't love and that's not something I generally say about albums I enjoy this much. Do yourself a favor grab this gem immediately, you won't be sorry.

I dont see anything bad with the album, i thought it was pretty good and much more fun than the other albums, while it feels like its more accessible to broader audience but at the same time they manage to keep songs pretty good. Its catchy and easier to get into.

I'm writing this review while listening to the song Wait Up (Boots of Danger) which is why I named the title of the review "fun album." It's just a fun song to listen to that puts you in a good mood, much like the rest of the album. If you enjoyed Elephant Shell I don't think you'll be disappointed with this one. You will definitely find yourself tapping your foot to the songs.

I think the songwriting was compromised on this album. There isn't a Tessellate or In a Cave, but for the most part the album is still addictive and has catchy hooks, which I like. The first track is the best track, favorite food, and every track after that kind of falls short of duplicating this awesome track, but it does flow into one almost conceptual album under the umbrella of "champ." which i give them credit for. You'd have to try this yourself. It doesn't blow my socks off at first, but it still seems like TPC has something more, some more potential.

not their best, still great,
This review is from: Champ (MP3 Download)
Champ is another catchy synth pop album from TPC, but this time around with much better production than usual. Its not quite the fun grit of A Lesson in Crime, and i'd say it lacks the radio hits of Elephant Shell, but as an album i'd say it's just as good (or almost as good in the case of A Lesson in Crime) as anything they've put out before. My favorite tracks are "Favorite Colour", "Gone", "Wait Up (Boots of Danger)", and "Breakneck Speed". Anyone who likes indie rock should check this album out, its too fun to pass up. 5/5

Is this TPC?,

I've been a huge TPC fan for almost three years now...the first two albums are just awesome. Maybe my expectations were too high. Some of the songs on this album sound like they could be performed by lesser bands - there is no quirkiness here. Yes, the songs are "catchy" but not in the way that they were before. While I do believe that it's good for bands to mature, becoming more mainstream is not the best way to go about it. (I miss the instrumental quality!!!) Favorite track is "Hands Reversed"
