Editorial Reviews

Called ''...the most gifted pure Jazz singer of her generation'' by noted jazz critic Mark Stryker of the Detroit Free Press, singer/pianist Champian Fulton marks her Sharp Nine debut with a program of twelve tunes that conveys the depth and breadth of her musical talent: from the sauciest blues of It's Too Late, Baby Too Late to the sophisticated bebop lines she spins on Bud Powell's Celia, the common denominator is the natural born swing that emanates from every word she sings and every note she plays. Accompanied by her working rhythm section throughout, with guest appearances from tenor man Eric Alexander and flugelhornist Stephen Fulton, this set announces the emergence of a complete musical stylist well on her way to making a significant mark on the vocal jazz scene.

Wow, Champian just continues to get better and better! She is a sensational pianist and is gifted with a terrific voice. If you haven't heard her yet, you are really missing a treat. If you want to know about her voice, think Dinah Washington and Ella. I'm not saying she sounds like them but there are elements of their style in her voice. Her take on "You're Getting to Be a Habit" is simply delightful. Her playing on "I Cover the Waterfront" is the essence of soul. She is well grounded in bebop, swing and the blues. Tin Pan Alley must have been a few blocks away from where she grew up.

It goes without saying that a musician of Champian's talent has the confidence to surround herself with musicians that are talented as well. I wish I grew up playing an instrument so I could better describe the details of what I hear but find it hard to translate. I am sure that others on Amazon will do a better job once they hear this wonderful CD. All I can say is that the Sax, Flugelhorn, Bass and Drum players act like a team and blend very well with their leader. All I can say in conclusion, is to waste no time and buy/download this CD yesterday!

This CD is well worth the wait!

Champian's voice is certainly reminiscent of Dinah Washington. Her piano chops belie her age! Her group is very cohesive (both recorded and live). Stephen Fulton (her dad) is a renowned horn player in his own right.

"Sings and Swings" and "The Breeze and I" are my two favorite CD's by Champian.

Catch her live: [...]

This is her 4th album (including the big band album and the Japanese label CD), and a fine example of Champian's continued growth and mastery of this music. Really, at this point there are only a very few who combine her singing and piano skills, and I am not sure if any approach her in terms of musical depth. Her understanding of the songs and intuitive jazz sense are remarkable for one so young - (can we still say that? She will be 30 in a couple of years!). This album is a great mix of uptempo and ballads, and like the title of the album, she really swings the uptempo songs (It's Alright) and wrings your heart out with the ballads (I'd Give a Dollar for a Dime). She has added a samba - just beautiful, maybe something that she will continue to feature. Just the instrumentals alone are worth the price of the CD (these are I Cover the Waterfront and Celia - incredible playing!). If you've heard her live, she is also a great performer in person. If this were vinyl (and not CDs or MP3s) you would stack this album in there with the other jazz masters, it is that good.

Every song in this jazz collection is a gem. Her voice and piano abilities are mesmerizing. It's times like this I wish I had the musical knowledge to write the proper adjectives for this amazing talent. And her backup ain't bad either.
