Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

During 15 years in Congress, Schroeder, representative from Colorado and a recent presidential hopeful, has combined professional and family responsibilities in a way, she notes here, that has prompted her unflagging activism regarding problems faced by the average American family today. The Schroeder family, to be sure, is not average. With the help of tolerant relatives and a supportive husband, Schroeder as a young woman was able simultaneously to teach, practice law and raise two children. She stresses that in Congress she involves herself with issues of day care, the single parent, the displaced housewife, illness in the family and other matters that surround a most important but underrepresented constituencyour nation's children. Arising out of Schroeder's travels throughout the United States on the Great American Family tour in 1987-88, this book, written with freelancers Camp and Lipner, impressively documents her efforts to create a national family policy. From Library Journal

Promoting a strong legislative agenda in support of the family, Schroeder (D-Col.), Congresswoman and former presidential candidate, makes a compelling case for the need to emphasize and fund programs that ease the practical and financial burdens facing today's families. She predicts drastic social and economic costs for our failure to utilize the resource of the family; she shares her experiences as a pioneering legislator and a working mother. This book gives a significant treatment to a timely topic; it is certain to attract widespread interest in public and academic libraries.

This book is one of far too many "Here's Why You Should Elect Me President" offerings that seem to spring up like noxious weeds every four years in the US. Despite spending over two decades in Congress, Schroeder's actual legislative acomplishments benefitting American families were minimal, which leads one to wonder what she felt her basis of expertise on this topic was. Not that it matters - the true purpose of these "listen to me talk about me" tomes from politicians is to serve as a surreptitious fundraising device for their political campaigns. In this instance, it's unclear which had less momentum, her presidential candidacy or her book sales -- but suffice to say that the "Great American Families" across the nation were less than impressed with either.
