3.0 out of 5 stars Good but could be better
First off I'd like to say for the price the Champion is an excellent machine for what I imagine most people use it for. However with that being said I must say that for a Raw foodist or a pro-active vegan/vegitarian it is less than ideal. It makes juice GREAT but does not juice greens or wheatgrass well and smokes when you try to homogonize several things such as almond...

I've been using my Champion juicer for about four years now. I also have an Acme 5001 juicer. The Acme is excellent, but I've found myself using the Champion and storing the Acme.

The Champion juicer is extremely easy to set up and use.

The continuous feed feature allows making large amounts of juice without intermittent cleaning. The Champion is versatile. With the screen removed, it's a mincer. With the blank instead of the screen it makes sorbets. With the large hole screen, the juice is pulpier, my preference. You can buy a mill attachement to mill small amounts of flour, nuts, or flax seed.

Juicing is messy. The Champion is OK in that regard but not great. It's not as messy as some, more messy than others. Cleanup is quick and easy. Disassembly is a breeze. Unlike other machines with many parts and hard-to-clean screened centrifical baskets, the Champion has a small semi flat filter screen that is easy to clean.

The plastic parts are tough nylon but stain easily from food. The stains go away in the dishwasher. The parts aren't supposed to be dishwasher safe, but we've never had problems.

The residue is usually reasonably dry. If not, it can be run through again to squeeze more juice out of it. The residue can be used as mulch or to thicken and flavor soups and stews.

The home model motor has almost never stalled on me, though it has slowed with carrots or cabbage if I use too much pressure. Just a slightly reduced pressure on the tamper and the motor speeds right back up.

I know somebody who has had the same Champion since the 1950's and still uses it. Parts are reasonably priced and easily available.

It doesn't juice grass, but you can roll the leaves of cabbage or lettuce and juice them. It doesn't juice leaves as good as some other juicers, but it's OK for occasional use or if the leaves are to add flavor to other juices. A person who only eats raw food would probably benefit from a slow speed gear or screw press type unit instead, even at twice the price.

The unit is heavy and bulky, but has had the same honored spot on our kitchen sink since we bought it new. I love the 1950's utilitarian styling. I'd recommend getting another juicer if it needed to be stored in a cabinet after each use or if you want something sleek looking.

If it was stolen, I'd buy another, except maybe a dark color that doesn't stain.

Update November 2009. It's still going strong, and I've discovered other uses for it. We bought the grain mill, and use it to grind flax seed. An apple butter recipe I made calls for quartering the apples, boiling them for 20 minutes, and then straining the apples to remove the skin and seeds. Straining by hand was extremely slow and labor intensive, but I got a brain storm (necessity being the mother of invention) and put the sieve plate with large hole in my Champion. Running all 20 or so lbs. of cooked apples through it took about 5 easy minutes. The applesauce came out of the bottom, the skin and seeds out the end. If anything, I love my old Champion even more than before.

Overall good but defintly has room for improovement.

I am not a raw foodist, but I really like making my own peanut butter, good juices and fruit sorbet. For these sorts of things, the Champion is great. We like putting frozen fruit into it to make yummy, no-sugar-added desserts. and since it has a continuous extraction, it doesn't get clogged. Definitely worth the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works as Advertised!, September 25, 2005

This little machine is a brute - obviously a refined design, improved over time. It does one thing very well - extracts the juice from vegetables and fruits. It is not under-powered; and the pulp by-product is quite dry, meaning that most of the juice is extracted. The motor portion is quite heavy and the juicer parts go together with some effort. A slightly built person with weaker hands may have trouble assembling and disassembing the juicer parts. I am pleased with the machine and its performance. If you are going to get into "juicing", this is a great machine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic juicer is highly reccomended., March 24, 2006

A classic tool which is highly reccommended. I have owned mine for 15+ years and have loved it. This tool is legendary and for good reason. This is the one to buy for life since it may never have to be replaced or repaired. I agree with the positive comments made by others. I use mine for juicing carrots. This machine is heavy and powerful. I buy the big juicing carrots in 25lb bags and this machine is almost impossible to stall even when jamming the giant juicers through it non-stop. This is the type of machine used in juice bars. You can use it continuosly without cleaning which is a unique feature.

5.0 out of 5 stars I've had one for around 18 years now, June 18, 2007
This review is from: Champion Juicer White 1/Unit
I bought it around 18 years ago and have used it off an on ever since. It's definitely the most industrial piece of kitchen equipment I have.

I've recently started using it regularly again and thought to myself there must surely be easier to clean better juicers on the market after all this time. I've pored over reviews and information on all other juicers I could find and was surprised that really there is nothing better out there still. Sure there are easier to clean ones but they do not seem to juice as well and people complain of them breaking down all the time. 18 years is a pretty good track record, I guess I'll just live with the cleanup time.

My juicer works as well as it did the day I got it, however it has become quite stained from all the juicing over the years. The auger has yellowed somewhat. I've never replaced any of the parts.

On the downside I still wish it would do citrus without foaming so heavily but I guess that's just the way it is.

I'm not certain if the newer models use the same motors, this thing weighs easily 20 to 30 pounds, maybe it's more like the commercial type models they have now. Anyway, I thought since I had it so long I should mention that here for anyone who needs this info.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Juicer - worth the money, September 2, 2006
This review is from: Champion Juicer White 1/Unit
This is a good juicer that is easy to use and quite easy to clean. I use mine just for making fruit and vegetable juices so I can't speak to how effective it is in making other items.
I've found it to be well worth it's rather hefty cost.

4.0 out of 5 stars What a difference a good juicer makes!, November 13, 2010

This review is from: Champion Juicer White 1/Unit
I have fibromyalgia and suffer with pain and fatigue every single day ... some days are worse than others but I haven't had a pain-free day in almost 14 years ... until today. And this is only my fourth day of using the Champion juicer to improve my diet. My only complaint is that the pulp doesn't move through very well and I have to stop in the middle of making a glass of juice to take the body apart and clear the screen. This seems like a design flaw that could be easily remedied by a change to the structure of the cutter. Otherwise I am feeling GREAT about this purchase!!!And I would recommend this juicer to anyone who suffers from chronic pain or illness of any kind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love Love Love It!, July 17, 2009

A friend of mine told me about this a couple of years ago. I don't know why I waited so long to get it. I especially like making "ice cream" from frozen fruit. And the fresh juices are a delight. Very easy clean up, which I REALLY like.

It did a good job grinding pumpkin seeds that had soaked in water for several hours (was supposed to be 24) for a raw foods pate. We had to add a bit of water at the beginning because it was just creating a sticky paste on the blades.
