its a really good price for a heavy duty winch like this. the only problem i think is that it weighs well over 100 pounds, but its a really good, powerful winch.

Do not buy this winch,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

We have recently purchased 10 of these winches, 5 from sams club and 5 from amazon. Of the 10 we purchased 6 have failed within the first month of use. Of those 6 that failed 2 of them failed on the 1st day. Noticed that half of them have one style release for free spool and the other half is different which makes me believe they know there is a problem with the design. The problem we are having with them is they will not stay engaged, 2 of them (brand new) would not engage at all. We went with these simply for the price since we had to buy so many, we are junking these and going back to warn. These are very unreliable and can not be trusted.

Failed First Test,
This review is from: Champion Power Equipment 10587 Winch with Speed Mount Hitch Adapter - 10,000 lb Capacity (Automotive)
As a test I set this to pull on a small stump from a small bush that had died over a year ago, an azalea so that you know how small I'm talking about. The control for freewheel and engage seemed way too stiff before starting the test, but I got it to engage. With a very slight pull, it starting to grind, so I engaged the lever again, this time tighter. The winch began to pull tighter, but nowhere near it's capacity (I would think, at least) when it starting the grinding noise again. This time, there was no more adjustment remaining with the lever. At this time, I can pull the cable against the winch. Obviously this must go back to Sam's Club! I will not accept a trade. Too bad, I had high hopes. Guess you really do get what you pay for!Addendum: After a couple of months after I returned this winch, Champion contacted me and then went out of their way to determine why I was not satisfied with this winch and how did they fail me in my purchase and subsequent assistance. I am satisfied that they understand that it is easier for us to return the item vs. dismantling and paying the shipping for the parts. Because of the excellent price point, coupled with their desire to assure my satisfaction, I would now give this winch another try.

8,000lb version works great so far,

I bought the 8000lb version from tractor supply in upstate NY and promptly used it to pull a Ford Excursion out of the snow... my friend tried to drive down a snowmobile trail. It took 5 days to get it back to pavement he made it so far down the trail before sinking 3ft down into the snow. had to run at almost 100% duty cycle, the only breaks it got was when we had to hook to trees closer to the road. that was winter 08-09. it has successfully pulled out anything I hook it to with no problems at all. Most recently, A friend tried to drive his truck through a wet alkali pit near a gypsum mine. We had to hook 2x 1 ton trucks together and block the tires because the winch was dragging the trucks backwards trying to pull out the 1/2 ton truck that was stuck. I can honestly say, I expected this thing to break many times.. yet its still pulling strong. If I do have to replace it, it will probably be another Champion.

Great winch for the money,

I purchased my winch at Sam's Club over 2 years ago and have no problems with my winch other than the power connectors rusting.. (my fualt I should have put some electric grease on them to protect from the road salt). This winch is very nice because it has everything you need to get started, the hitch mount, all the wiring, and extra goodies like a pully block. I use my winch to pull stranded vehicles out of the ditch in snow storms, and have to date pulled at least 50 cars/trucks/vans with no problems.People that say it doesn't engage, I dont think they are using it correctly. Also I dont know if some people might not be allowing enough down time between pulls. With electric winches you CAN NOT pull continuously for long peroids of time. The motor's will over heat. You need to give it a break after pulling for more than a couple minutes. Just like you can sit there and crank the starter on your car for too long. :/

Be wary - quality questionable,

Please do your homework before buying this unit. Many off-roaders and farm employees have tried these units only to have them fail months after purchase. If you plan on depending on your winch for self-recovery, you had better be sure it's worth saving a few hundred versus a Warn or even a SmittyBilt.
