Lou Holtz back in 1986 decided that his Notre Dame football players needed a bit of inspiration as they took to the field. Holtz had a sign crafted that read Play Like a Champion Today." The sign bright gold with dark blue lettering was positioned above a stairway outside the Notre Dame locker room and beneath another larger sign listing all of the Fighting Irish's national championships. And soon a tradition emerged: players tapped the "Play Like a Champion Today" sign for luck on the way to the field.
