5.0 out of 5 stars You must read this book!
I wanted to preview a few chapters of the book before I gave it to my 10 year old daughter for Christmas. Needless to say, I read it from cover to cover. Summer Sanders writes, in plain English, about her parents' roll in her successful swimming career. This book should be required reading for any parent who has a child who participates in sports!

3.0 out of 5 stars Summer's Olympic Wins were a product of her Family's Support
In Summer Sander's book Champions are Raised, not Born she talks about her life and how her parents affected it. Summer believed that the measure of a true champion I show well they take a defeat and Summer was about to take them in stride. Summer believed that her four Olympic medals were not just from her hard work but from the support of her parents and coaches also...

5.0 out of 5 stars Overachievers, December 21, 2000
By A Customer
I really enjoyed this book and Summer has helped me keep my daughter's goals in perspective. I have a 9 year old over achiever who doesn't need pushed but needs encourgement and wants us as parents to comment on her achievements. I have learned that not only verbalizing our comments but showing her through our actions that we approve of her achievements. I learned that through this book. I picked this book up because of the attachment to swimming, but it definately carries over into all corners of our lives.

This book is full of wonderful information on how to raise happy active children. My daughter loved reading it. It was a great reminder of why she loves swimming.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thanks a million, Summer!, April 6, 2000
Summer was raised to be the type of person who gives something back and leaves the world a better place. This book is a superb effort. As the father of kids who swim and play other sports, it was a great reality check for me. It went further it reminding me what great parenting is all about - having fun with your kids, being there to support them always, developing adults with the confidence to make their own decisions, learn from failures etc. I was also intrigued in that her most cherished memories are not her medals but the camraderie she enjoyed. I saw a TV interview with the great French rugby star Jean-Pierre Rive and all he remembers now is the friendships he forged through sport. This is a great book which I would like to thank Summer for writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down, August 11, 2003

As a former swimmer and as a parent of 3 age-groups swimmers I figured this book would provide some insight into success. However, i didn't anticipate how much insight I would take away from it. It is truly amazing how much Ms. Sanders had been able to accomplish in her life and it is refreshing to see that someone so young had everything in the proper perspective.

Hats off to her parents for raising and supporting (without pushing) Summer to accomplish all that she set out to do. I see the parents on the side of the pool who constantly push their kids so much so that they ultimately push them totally out of the pool all together. This is a fantastic how-to book for parents, regardless of what their kids are into.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Info, April 25, 2003

While not the most organized book ever written, Summer Sander's discussion is insightful and balanced. There are no "a-ha" moments that will blow you away, but a whole bunch of minor insights that add up to a lot. Great reading for any parent of an athlete, from a star to an also-ran.

5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluble Book..., November 23, 2000
This review is from: Champions Are Raised, Not Born: How My Parents Made Me a Success (Paperback)
I bought Summer's book because I didn't want to put it down, I wanted to read it over and over, and I want to pick it up from time to time over the next several years. When I become a father I'll want my kids to excel where their abilities lie but most importantly, to do it for the right reasons. It's invaluble to read a book that was written by a champion both in her sport and in her life. Thanks Summer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Summer Sizzles, May 13, 2000
Every parent, especially those who appear to be living vicariously through their athletic or talented children, should read this carefully from cover to cover. It should help anyone understand the treatment that a talented child should receive. Furhtermore, as a swim parent, it provided interesting reading that I could easily relate to.
