5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless classic
I don't know how to describe how wonderful this book is other than to say that after reading through this book for a week, I declared to my wife that I could spend an hour a day for the rest of my life reading this and be happy doing it. 3.0 out of 5 stars For The VERY Serious Horse Racing Fan
I was disappointed to discover that in this 448 page book, approximately 290 pages are devoted to thousands of lines of statistical data. It was not what I expected. The history of the sport is arranged in a time line format with a story on each decade from the 1890s to 2004, each chapter followed by 30 or more pages of statistics. I am not a horse racing fan but I did...

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless classic, June 7, 2006

I don't know how to describe how wonderful this book is other than to say that after reading through this book for a week, I declared to my wife that I could spend an hour a day for the rest of my life reading this and be happy doing it. If you are a fan of the game, this is something you absolutely must have. It not only covers the champion horses organized by decade, but each horse's lifetime past performances are included. Anyone who has ever picked up a racing form should delight to see the history of the game in this format.

I bought this book for my husband as a present as we both enjoy horses and horse racing. He couldn't put it down. The book offers easy to read history that would fascinate anyone with or without an interest in horse racing. The reader becomes excited reading about such races as Secretariat and Affirmed. It renews or introduces interest in horses such as Whirlaway and Nashua. This is a readable book with the past performances (which are hard to read for the non-horse race handicapper) that can be used as a reference book, too. The book is nicely organized with chapters representing the great horses of the decades and brings the reader up to the present (2004). If you like sports and admire athletes - here's a book filled with the greatest of them all!

As this book takes you through each decade from the late 1800's to more recent years, each decade provides great pictures of all the horse stars, the stories, the headliners, and much more. It's great to read about the top horses of the 50's even if you weren't born until the 60's. Its an awesome book, thick, heavy, and a better buy from Amazon vs. the bookstores. Excellent book for the serious horse racing fan!

Bought this as a gift for my Dad. Huge horse racing fan. I guess this is a must have item. I personally have no idea. But he raved and raved about getting it. If you are shopping for a gift also get them the horse racing almanac.

This is the second copy of this book I have purchased in 3 months! I bought one in a book store for WAY more money. The second I purchased from Amazon. It was in just as beautiful condition and was about 25% cheaper! A perfect gift for horseracing enthusiast!

I am not a horse racing fan but I did find this book enlightening. What I learned is that horse racing is really all about the breeding and the money. I found this very sad, especially in light of the recent tragic deaths of Barbaro and Eight Belles.
