5.0 out of 5 stars I almost didn't buy this book . . .
I almost didn't buy this book. I have so many BBQ books, why would I need yet another? Truth is I was shopping for something else and just added this book to the order so the total would qualify for free shipping. Boy, am I glad I did! This is one GREAT book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Simple, tasty recipes, questionable techniques
My husband, a noncook, received this book as a gift, to help him create masterpieces on his Smokenator Smokenator 1000 Transforms 22-inch Weber Kettle's Into Smokers. The recipes for brining and smoking he chose required readily available ingredients, which he mixed together, and poured over turkey parts. This books assumes the user is an experienced barbecue/smoker...

I almost didn't buy this book. I have so many BBQ books, why would I need yet another? Truth is I was shopping for something else and just added this book to the order so the total would qualify for free shipping. Boy, am I glad I did! This is one GREAT book.

Incredible recipes with regional influences from all over the US and Canada. And, I particularly love the authors use of fruit in so many of her sauces etc. There is inspired madness here. Check the Ultimate Smoker Burger - I never thought I could get excited about a burger recipe, but this one did it for me! In addition, I appreciate the inclusion of many side dishes that you can add to your smoker while the featured main courses are cooking. I highly recommend this book no matter what your experience level.

Ms.Putman, I can't wait for your next!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Smoke Book, August 5, 2006
This review is from: Championship BBQ Secrets for Real Smoked Food (Paperback)
With so many grill books on the market today, it is always a pleasure to find a book that is unfliinching in it's focus on one subject: Smoke in this case. The author is an authority. She has won many, many, cooking awards for professional chef contests as well as being an "ACE" on the BBQ circuit. Here is what I love in this book:
The Pork Loin Roast in Maple Mustard Brine is so tender, smoky and moist it will make you cry!
The Santa Fe Chicken Breast in Coffee Lime Marinade is amazing with the unusual flavors that include fresh cilantro and hot sauce along with the coffee and lime - quite wonderful!
The Blackberry Merlot Sauce and Fresh Blueberry & Ginger Sauce are deelish with smoked or grilled poultry or pork.
There are a dozen recipes for ribs and plenty for brisket, too.
AND, I love the simplicity of the instructions on smoking in the beginning of the book. It's not rocket science after all!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ain't Blown No Smoke, August 7, 2006
This review is from: Championship BBQ Secrets for Real Smoked Food (Paperback)
This is a well organized and user friendly compilation of BBQ recipe and cooking techniques that amateur "backyarders" to professional circuit riders can use. It contains insights that only a real experienced BBQ practioner would know and is shared in a manner that all can understand. "the quality of a service or product is what the customer says it is" I say this is EXCELLENT.

5.0 out of 5 stars CHAMPIONSHIP BBQ SECRETS FOR REAL SMOKED FOOD BY KAREN PUTMAN, August 6, 2006
This review is from: Championship BBQ Secrets for Real Smoked Food (Paperback)
It is one of the best books on barbequing that I have ever read. It is well formatted and full of useful information and not filled with the usual fluff (all recipes and no technique). I was especially impressed with the fact that the author herself took the time to respond to my e-mails and give me some personal cooking pointers. I highly reccomend this book to every backyard cook as-well-as the professional.

This is a great book to have in your BBQ collection. Karen's sauces are matched by no one. She is one of the trail blazers in the BBQ world and has taken time to put some of her best recipes in this book, holding back nothing on the recipes.

Book is well put together and easy to follow recipes. One of the neat little things I like that she did was all the little side tips on her recipes. Try the Raspberry BBQ Sauce! She is a World champion and creator of some very awesome BBQ sauces.

You will not go wrong with this book and you will expand your cooking experience for beyond the usual BBQ food.

GREAT BUY!

5.0 out of 5 stars I too can smoke right along with the best of them, May 23, 2007
This review is from: Championship BBQ Secrets for Real Smoked Food (Paperback)
I've always wanted to learn the fine art of smoking meat. I always thought that it was for the professionals or the ones more experienced than I. I purchased a grill/smoker and then headed down to our library to do some learning. Wow, was I happy to learn from someone like Karen Putman. She gave great easy to understand recipes that I had no problem following. She even gave us all the right to tweak anything that she came up with and that is wonderful. I've made some great ribs and chicken, and I take my hat off to her and her great book. She has renewed my interest in barbecuing with whatever I may have at the time. The book has caused me to want to go even further than I thought possible. Thanks Karen

5.0 out of 5 stars FORGET THE REST--THIS IS THE BEST!, May 22, 2008
I'm a pretty good cook, but I am an absolute novice when it comes to smoking.

I got about 8 or 10 books out of the library to start to get my feet wet. I quickly found I was returning to Championship BBQ Secrets time and time again. The recipes are clear, straightforward and get you through to excellent results. There are also plenty of hints, tips, variations offered throughout. The breadth of the taste variations and possibilities will keep us busy for a long time checking them out.

I have to say the the brisket and the ribs that I cooked with my first attempts came out very well. No leftovers.

The best thing about the book was that the reader is not constantly slapped up side the head with how the wonderful author is the world's best smoking chef and the litany of his or her triumphs. That got real old real quick, and turned me off several of the books very quickly. Plus, I found those were so full of the authors' self-puffery, it was near impossible to follow, find and identify anything they were trying to teach you.

I took all of the books back to the library, and I bought this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best recipe book period, July 2, 2006

andrea waters (kansas city, KS USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Championship BBQ Secrets for Real Smoked Food (Paperback)
This is not only the best BBQ recipe book I've ever read; it's a very well put together recipe book period. I didn't know that there were so many things and ways you could BBQ. Everything is very easy to understand and make. The pictures are beautifully photographed. And there is an added bonus at beginning of the book, which gives a very interesting and concise knowledge of BBQ that I never knew before. Such as "The Best Smoker for You" and explaining what cold smoking is.

The author outdid herself and you really feel like you are getting your moneys worth. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to everyone who loves to cook and eat BBQ.
