(This) is a true Telluride locals' novel... It's as if the secretive and supernatural Elliot family in Ray Bradbury's novel From the Dust Returned lived in the San Juan Mountains instead of the Illinois prarie. --Telluride Magazine - John Nizalowski

5.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars! January 26, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
OK, where to begin... So many things to say about this book.

Well, I loved it! I checked the sample, thought, 'not particularly original but written well enough to keep my interest so I'll buy it'. Then I enjoyed it so much that I focused on it and put all my other readings on unintended hiatus lol. I am looking forward to book 2 when it comes out.

So why 4.5 rounded up to 5? Well, I deducted points for too many similarities to Twilight but rounded up to 5 because although there are similarities, they are fairly superficial and the overall plot was quite different too.

Okay, so I used the T-word. But I have to say this really weird thing- if you liked Twilight, you'll probably like this and if you didn't like Twilight, you'll probably like this! LOL

They are similar because it's new girl in small town, Charity/Emily is a klutz, she meets with a group of in-betweeners in high school (not quite the cool kids, not the geeks and paired up already), there's a supernatural doctor and his artistic wife, they're wealthy and live in a large house in the woods outside of town, they've even got the supernatural friends who come by to visit, one of whom there's a 'past' with. There are other similarities too; some of the bad guys are two guys who happen to have a red-headed sister, etc.

However, several of the things that I and I know many others didn't like about Twilight are thankfully not in this story. No sparkly or inhumanly perfect people (though apparently everyone's gorgeous - aren't supernaturals always?).

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, Romantic story September 22, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition
I really enjoyed this story of love, truth and the supernatural. The writer reminds me of Stephenie Meyer in both her straight forward writing style and her desire to keep the story appropriate for the intended audience. As a mother of tweens and a teacher to teens, I am so happy to find stories that are fun, interesting and still respectable.

When you start the story, you will wonder if you are getting entangled in yet another vampire story. But I can assure you it is not! Almost immediately you find there to be mystery and twists that are so much fun. I cannot wait to read the next book and continue the journey with these characters.

I might be getting a little tired of this genre as a lot of these stories are starting to sound the same. Charity, Caroline and James are immortal and have to move around a lot so as not to come under suspicion. They don't know why they are different and feel lucky to have found each other. Charity repeats her senior year of high school over and over, Caroline has a clothing store specializing in period pieces and James is a doctor (Twilight anyone?). There is a family of religious nuts, the Lords, who hunt their kind down wanting to kill them for being "abominations".

Out of the blue, Charity, who never forms human friendships, is hanging out with four other students and meets the love of her life, Link. He accepts everything about her immortality and wants to help protect her. Of course there is a showdown with the Lord brothers and predictably, Link experiences a change that will propel the reader into book 2, My Link in Time (The Immortal Ones - Book Two).

This story is appropriate for any age group that read the first Twilight, with the occasional kiss and no sex. It was enjoyable, if predictable and I would recommend it to any fan of the genre. I really kind of feel this has been over done by now.

Would I/Did I buy it? Free download
Would I read it again? No
Would I recommend it to friends? Yes

5.0 out of 5 stars A Chance for Charity July 22, 2010
By Shari

This was a very well written and thought out book! I loved every character that was introduced and it was not slow or fast paced it was just right! It had me guessing and wondering what and who exactly Emily/Charity was and why Link was so familiar to her and her to him, and I would never have seen that one coming. Kudos to the author for that little twist. The wonderful way that Telluride was depicted makes me want to vacation there very soon and see everything these characters saw! Every character was likable and left you wanting to know their story too. I was fascinated with OZ and what has he been doing for the last few years, and now I am wondering what else new will we find out for Link and what is Eve and Marco's story :) its just never ending everything I want to see or read about. I can't wait for the next book in this series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Satisfying Ending March 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really liked this book. I liked the main characters and how the author brought different aspects of their lives together. I also liked the the way the tension in the relationship was developed. This is book one in the series, but the author still gives you a very satisfying ending and doesn't really leave you hanging like some of the other series books I've read. I don't know about you, but I really appreciated that! You may not be left with a big cliff-hanger, but you do get involved enough with the characters that I think you'll want to go on their next journey with them. I do.

This story is somewhat reminiscent of the Twilight saga, but with a few little differences. While not completely original, it is well-written. Read more

More About the Author

I live in a house with 1 man, 3 kiddos, 3 dogs, and 2 cats... it is a busy place around here. So when I am not feeding an animal, or a person, or driving a child to school, an appointment, or a music lesson, I sit down with my laptop in hand and try to get the stories out of my head. I have had a love of sci-fi since I was a kid... watching Star Trek with my father. I am such a junky for action packed sci-fi movies to this day... thanks Dad! That love started to include the supernatural/paranormal as I reached my teens. I will always thank Anne Rice and Lestat for introducing me to a whole new genre... and my love vampire fiction was born. When I began writing, I didn't even consider the YA paranormal genre. I started two previous projects that I couldn't finish, and I never knew why. But, when I started to write - A Chance for Charity (The Immortal Ones) - the story poured out of me and I loved every minute of the writing process! I still have those other stories, and someday I plan to go back and finish them.

I am a crafter by nature! This probably also explains my love of writing - it is in the creative family. I scrapbook, sew, bead, etc... I love to create. I have a room in my home dedicated to crafts. Paper, ribbons, stickers, die-cuts, there is a whole mess of supplies! At one time I was in the handcrafted wedding/party invitation business. You should see my kiddos' birthday invitations!

My other love is baking, although I don't do a ton of it. Because if I bake it, then I want to eat it! Cookie creation is a fun process. I like to see how many yummy ingredients I can cram into a recipe. So far, my favorite cookie is an oatmeal, coconut, chocolate chip, toffee bit cookie - YUM! You can find that recipe on my blog :) http://mywriteroad.blogspot.com
