Oh Michael, what in the world have you created? I found this book to be unimaginative and so sexist, that I had to keep reading just to share with my friends how horrible it was. The story line is not believable and the author doesn't have a clue about women's sexuality.
All the females are golddiggers, all the men are rapists, and this story taps into the worse black America has to offer. I don't even mean the crime either. It was uncomfortable to read as a female with a degree of consciousness. I wanted the story to have some redeeming value--on some level. I understand thug life, to a degree, but I wanted the author to give me that with a twist. Alas, it didn't happen.

"Chances" is the ultimate tale of survival in a game that many seem to lose. DeAndre is your average ex-convict that hits the block going for what he knows. He's trying to get back in the game, and because of his loyalty has his crew assembled, but life and family are his stumbling blocks. He's trying to get that money, find a true ride or die chick, watch out for baby sis, who seems to be drawn to an abusive kingpin, which makes them enemies.
Michael mos def penned a best seller with the electric chemistry between all of the characters, all loyal and down for each other until the very end. If you want to read urban lit in its rawest, rarest form, in all its glory, this is one of the ultimate reads with DeAndre, Ebony, DeeDee, Tony, Rich, and Eric. The characters are well defined, the storyline is consistent, and Ebony is definitely, 'bout it, 'bout it!! She's a down azz chic that earns all of her respect!!! Ain't no half-stepping with lil mama!! Micheal, lemme say Michael, one more time!!! Take your bow, because your introductory debut was MAGNIFICENT!!! Blessings to you and anxiously awaiting your sophomore piece of work!!! Keep 'em coming my brotha!!!

This review is from: Chances (Triple Crown Publications Presents) (Paperback)
D'Andre just gets out of prison and trying to get back into the swing of things. Being away for so long it was hard for him to get his swagger back in the hustle game but he had his bestfriend Eric and sister Deidre looking out for him. Soon as her gets his hustle back and starts with his come up he learns his sister is getting abused by her kingpin boyfriend. Desperate to defend her honor he starts a rival between D'andre crew and his sister's boyfriend's crew. Also, the same time he has to deal with a ex-love who betrayed him and trying to get in good graces. Will D'Andre be able to keep the game locked?
I thought this book was really a great read. My opinion also is that alot of the things in there were hard to believe or a little fairytale but I still enjoyed reading the story all in all. I couldnt put it down with all the drama and chaos. It gives you money, power, murder, love, and great sex. The combination for a great book!!

"I don't think it's possible to love you more than I love you right now, baby. You are the best thing that happened to me and without you, I'm nothing." Ebony tried to take a deep breath but choked. Will you please hurry up?"she asked through her sobs. The love Ebony had for DeAndre and Dee was so unreal. This book was so good that I started it in the morning and finshed it that night. I can't wait for the next book.

Survival of the Fittest,

After serving six years in prison, Deandre doesn't hesitate to jump back into the drug game. He soon finds himself at war with his sister's abusive boyfriend, Rich, who also happens to be one of the Midwest's biggest kingpins. After his best friend is gunned down by Rich and his goons, Deandre vows to seek revenge. It all boils down to survival of the fittest on the streets of the Chi. Once I started reading Chances, I could not put it down. It's one of the best books I've read this year. Michael Covington gives us classic material with his excellent debut.

All in all this book wasn't the worst that I've read but it def doesn't go on my top 10 or even 20 list. I found myself lost in this book at time because the author would switch characters and I woudln't notice. I also felt the author didnt want any boring moments in this book so he tried to keep it fast paced but ruined what could've been a great book. The story over all just seemed like most of the other 'hood books I've read. What I really hated was the torture that was placed upon these female characters for no reason and it was constant over and over again. I also felt that the ending was rushed too much and a real thug wouldn't have went out like that also but thats just how I see it. I wish I didn't waste my money on this book. I should've just rented from the library or something.
