I Thought This Was Where It Was Going, September 25, 2007
In Chandler Park Drive, by Michael C. Lee, I stepped into the world of Detroit's Narcotic Unit and followed Denard Blake's journey from arresting two-bit street hustlers to taking down kingpins. Given an opportunity proposed by the DEA to bust Stone, a major player in Detroit's drug problem, Denard's adrenaline rushed at the heights that such a case could take him and his department. He could not have imagined that this opportunity would net him more than a drug dealer, recognition, and similar case work. When the Feds made an appearance at Denard's base, it was evident that much more would be revealed.
Denard's home life was less stressful than many. He had a wife, Sheila, who was almost perfect; gave him space, never nagged, and was always supportive. When Denard saw an ex-girlfriend, Kathy, he questioned why he could not maintain a friendship with her. Without an answer, he decided there would be no harm. Denard soon found out how fast situations changed from innocent to reckless, leaving little time to think of repercussions.
Chandler Park Drive had a good, but predictable, plot. The first half of the novel left me confused. I had a hard time following who was talking because I could not get a good grasp of the characters and their nicknames. By midpoint, I decided to just read; following the storyline with little concern over individual characters. I lumped the characters under `good guys' and `bad guys', which rescued the story. I think Chandler Park Drive would make a good movie but it did not pack a good enough punch for me to recommend it to others. With as much education and experience as the author has, I could see him creating training and/or motivational materials for those in the law enforcement field and being very successful at it.

(RAW Rating: 4.5) - Up Close and Personal Look at the War on Drugs, June 2, 2006
Leading his narcotics division in a series of successful drug busts, Detroit police officer, Denard Blake, is at the top of his game. However, he is bored with arresting small-time hustlers. His true desire is to take down the kingpins. When a special assignment becomes available for his department to assist the DEA, his supervisor jumps at the opportunity, giving Blake the action he craves.
Happily married to Sheila for three years, Blake runs into his former girlfriend, Kathy London. Will he be able to maintain a platonic relationship with the sultry Kathy? The story intensifies as he tries to maintain his undercover status while dealing with Stone, a major drug dealer who he is trying to take down. All the while, there is corruption within the operation that Blake does not suspect.
I loved this book because it was a really fast-paced, energetic read. Lee used a lot of action and dialogue which kept the story moving. I found myself sitting at the edge of my seat and not wanting to put the book down. His writing style was very simplistic which worked well for maintaining the pace of the book. The only drawback to the book was the extremely small font the author used which can be a distraction. I do recommend CHANDLER PARK DRIVE.
