Editorial Reviews

Detectives - some officers of the law, some outside the law and all of them modern knight errants caught up in a jigsaw puzzle of death and dark deeds - were out in force on 1971 screens in Dirty Harry, The French Connection, Get Carter, Klute, Shaft and in the lesser-known but intriguing tale of hard-luck, old-school shamus Chandler. Warren Oates (The Wild Bunch) portrays the non romantic ex-P.I. (the name is an homage to detective novelist Raymond Chandler), who ditches his rent-a-cop job to return to sleuthing. His first gig: meet a woman (Leslie Caron) arriving at L.A.'s Union Station. But it turns out there's more to the job, a lot more. Like keeping the woman and himself alive.

3.0 out of 5 stars a failure December 30, 2012

With this cast and subject this should have been a great movie. Shame it's not even good. Ok at best. For Warren Oates completists only.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Predictable but Enjoyable 70s PI story August 14, 2014

A sort of simplistic story line; Oates is hired to chaperone Caron to facilitate a secret double cross. But the proceedings have that queer and captivating kind of 70s affect; a mix of pace, landscapes and sensibilities as they were and then were discarded not a whole lot of years ago. And of course, the casting was delightful. The ending might have been better but I still enjoyed it.

5.0 out of 5 stars a cool summer breeze September 20, 2013
if you are looking for explosions and shoot them up where the good guy never gets shot, or video game format..skip this film...this is classic 70's glides trough at a slow pace like life was at the time it was made...the scenery and background is totally captivating if you are one that seeks tranquility ...but most important it gives a window to what life was like then ,and how much everything has changed.....

1.0 out of 5 stars First effort as a director fails miserably November 30, 2012
"Chandler" is a film with a terrific cast - Warren Oates, Charles McGraw, Gloria Grahame, Royal Dano, Scatman Crothers, Richard Loo, Mitch Ryan - but it never gets off the ground. Director Paul Magwood (1943) complained that MGM re-cut the film and changed the music, but that's only half the problem. The other problem is that the scenes themselves are dull and lackluster, regardless of how you cut them, and regardless of the heavy handed music score that was not uncommon for early 70s action films.

BTW - Magwood was married to co-star Leslie Caron. This was Magwood's first film and only film as a director. His later career was built around work on TV as an assistant director for B TV movies and series ("Nero Wolfe", Mike Hammer", "Father Dowling Mysteries").

Those of you, like me, who love Warren Oates films ("The Wild Bunch", "Badlands", "Ride the High Country", "Dillinger", "Bring me the Head of Alfredo Garcia") will be disappointed.
