Book Description

The summer of 1991 arrives early in the small town of Donaldsonville, Louisiana. Allison Smith, a twelve-year-old circus aerialist in her father's Smith Family Circus, discovers that her prize elephant, Chang Phoouk, has disappeared. She asks her ten-year-old brother Steve to help her find him to solve the mystery of his capture. Did someone kidnap him so that he would earn lots of money for his ransom? Is Allison's aerial partner, Jack Everly, really to be trusted? What is the reason for Chang's irrational behavior whenever Jack comes around him? She has to follow the glare of Jack's white shirt into the night to see where he takes him. Does she run into many obstacles? With bold courage and witty detective work, she finds Chang imprisoned in a sawmill along the levee in Donaldsonville.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magical Musings, April 14, 2002

This review is from: Chang Phoouk (Paperback)
Jane Davis Smith crafts a tale worthy of her contemporaries in young people's fiction, the story of Chang Phoouk is reimagined to include a mystic property that is all the rage with the Harry Potter crowd these days without falling prey to that franchise's more negative elements. This may be the only children's book to include the story of a magical albino elephant and his adventures in America. Jane Davis Smith is able to breathe creative life into this true story and the slightly abstracted look of the book's interior artwork is sure to delight those easily enraptured by bright splashes of color, whether they be small children or even the elderly (for whom this book holds a special charm). The book offers a perspective on "magic" that does not delve into the occult realm of sorcery, but rather centers around the innocent character of Chang Phoouk, who can be seen not as some demon or foreign deity, but rather as the outlet of one child's brilliant imagination- invested with only the power and wonder of the truly young mind. Highly reccomended for nature lovers and those who hold family values above the "flavor-of-the-week" sorcery trends prevailing in young people's fiction these days.
